Skip the 1911s, especially kimber. Stick with something with decent capacity. Home invaders are coming in numbers these days and you may not land every shot. You don't have to stick with 9mm, but if you must get a .45, get something with higher capacity. The Glock 21 hold 13 rounds of .45 Auto but has a grip to thick for most. A Glock 17 holds 34 rounds of 9mm and has a slimmer fit. Hit up your local shop and try a few different full size pistols and see which fits best for you.
