-Japanese is not easy, it all depends on your first language, if it's English you will sound like an idiot all your life. Grammar is not that complex, the most difficult part is getting used to, and master, the writing system.
Anyway, knowing Japanese is not a requirement to be an English teacher in Japan.

You don't need shit to teach English in Japan.
It's better if you're native, it will be a lot easier to find a job, and you can work in normal schools.

As a non native (like me), you can't work in normal schools (they won't give you the proper visa), but there are tons of "eikaiwa" (English conversation) schools that hire non natives.

Another requirement would be having any sort of bachelor degree. I can go deeper into burocracy if you want.

You don't need any Japanese, but it can be helpful in some circumstances.

The pay is average for Japanese standards, you won't get rich, but depending on where you're from, it's a big jump up (like it is for me, I come from Italy, never had the chance to work in that stupid country).
Thing is, in most companies/schools you will have a decent salary, but at the price of being in a semi-slave situation.
I'm lucky my boss is American, so I can avoid a lot of crap.
