Actually at least for gays there's the "gay uncle theory" that suggests some genetic predisposition to being gay may be being selected for an passed on because it doesn't make people gay 100% of the time.
The idea is that a gay family member is less likely to have their own children but will still contribute to the family and their relate children who have similar genetics and may carry the "gay gene".
