This is actually a pretty complex moral dilemma.

I mean, it initially looks like the kid way over reacted and used this as an opportunity to vent pent up anger, but what if I was to bring up the idea that the bird's life was jsut as valuable as the dog's? Like, if the dog can't treat other living things with the basic respect that is allowing them to not be killed by you for no reason, he's kind of an asshole, right? Again, I don't condone beating or choking your dog for any reason other than self defense(choking would still be a weird move here tho), but for all we know that bird was this kid's best friend. Seeing your best friend die, no matter who you are, is gonna spark some big and confusing feelings. Big and sudden feelings can overwhelm some people to a point that they temporarily lose their fucking shit and act on that impulse.

All of that said, there's also the question of eye for an eye morality. Is it okay to violently punish this dog for a crime it doesn't even wholly comprehend? For the dog it very well may have been instinct and not malicious intent.

This thread brings up some complex questions. Good job op. Are you gonna ruin this dude's life over this? Tell us about him first, at the least. And about yourself too while you're at it.

No. The dog cannot consider the value of life the way you or I can. The dog's behavior is dictated by a combination of instinct and training. The owner failed to train the dog to not be aggressive around the bird, or failed to recognize the possibility of aggression in the first place. Either way, the owner failed here and punished the dog for being a dog.
