As much as the abusers would like that to happen, there's just no way that we'd legalise abusing talking pets. A lot of the stuff like litterpals would be flat out banned, they certainly wouldn't be marketed by the makers of a kids show.

And just because they were bred in a lab doesn't mean they're not real animals, they still eat, breathe, shit, have sex, think, and feel. However if they are as poor at surviving as most authors suggest, even with a prolific breeding rate, they still wouldn't survive in the wild, so there'd be little chance of them going feral.

They're living animals, they certainly do think and feel. The "programming" thing isn't like, I don't know, Lisp or something (heh), it's just imprinting over generations, which gets passed on partly through behaviour, and a little bit of magic gene tinkering. I like the headcanon that fluffies are mass bred in such huge quantities that it causes big and fast inflation. Professional factories breed hundreds and thousands of them, and amateur breeders do it in their basement. Anyone can breed fluffies. Just get a mare and stallion and let them do it. A mare quickly gives birth, and can almost immediately get bred again. The inflation gets to a point that fluffies are practically free. As for the survival bit, i think its just people not going into fluffy lore, but enjoying morbid stories. Fluffies are probably fairly successful in the wild, and even moreso in packs. But no one here wants a happy ending. They want the smarty who took a turn into the wrong backyard.

As for abusers and morals, i think its just a detail spared to make the stories work. 95% of Fluffies are good, and 99% of owners are good. Its the 1% of abusers that get the spotlight.

There's a lot of unexplored space in herd dynamics. Large predators have been extirpated from much of North America, so a herd out in the woods could probably breed like rabbits. Maybe the herd breaks up above a certain population, and some component wanders into a suburban area.

Urban herds seem to be practically nonexistent.
Mortality would be much higher. Most urban street fluffies would be strays.

Yeah, in hindsight a good portion of intestines would need transplanting, due to the sepsis coming from there. But all fluffies can "donate" tissues from any other fine.
