I don't tip. Ever! Why should I? Does /b/ tip? If so, why?

The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood.
Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

This looks so weird seen by an Italian.
Why this job in your countries is based on tips? There is no proper salary?
Why don't tip also every other job, so?
What if I am a postman? I want my tips too
>>
I do bc I do in the hope that these bitches suck my dick one day. Male and ugly ones I don't tip
>>
>>734837911
it depends. in germany, first of all people dont have to live off of tips, its a nice bonus to have. i used to work at a pizza delivery and i valued it alot of someone just gave you one more euro or rounded up + one euro or something like that, its just something nice to do.
if the service is good in a restaurant/delivery service ill most likely round up + two euros. if its shit idgaf anyway

I tip because
1. The reality is that servers do not get paid very much.
2. I can afford it.
3. When a server does a good job, is pleasant, friendly, accurate and efficient, I think it's good to reward that behavior.
4. At most of the places I eat, the servers are single mothers and I know they need the money.
5. If you are a good tipper and go to the same places enough to be remembered, you will get the occasional perk that offsets the cost of the tip (get a double if you only order one shot, bigger portions, free dessert, whatever). Sometimes I've gotten enough "extra" food I can take it home for another two meals.

Not telling anyone else what to do, just answering the OP's question.
>>
>>734837911
I work harder than waiters/waitresses.. I don't get tipped. I get paid by the cunt I work for.
>>
>>734837911
I leave an average tip for average service, a good tip for good service, and no tip for bad service.
>>
I don't tip because I don't live in a 3rd world country where workers need to beg money to pay for a bad health insurance.
>>
>>734839185
>Why this job in your countries is based on tips? There is no proper salary?
They get literally minimum wage salary and basically live off tips. Maximum cuckpitalism.

>Why don't tip also every other job, so?
It'd be hilarious if a cop arrested you and then politely waited for you to tip him.
>*khm khm*
>Did you like how I warned you about banging your head on the car, sir?
>Did I read you your rights too fast, sir?
Actually they take bribes, so that's even worse form of compensation for shit salary.
>>

I don't, unless they make it blatantly obvious.

But the waiter doesn't know how much I've tipped until after they've already brought the meal, so unless they're just spitting in everyone's food, my tip won't affect the service I receive.

This. If you're to poor to tip why are you going to a bar or eating out?
>>
The purpose of tipping is to offset the fact that in the US, servers are not paid a living wage. That is the current state of affairs and the reason that the cultural norm of tipping exists. You not tipping is you not participating in our current social contract.

If you want this to change - it is controlled at the state level. Write your governor and your congressman. Don't short someone what is essentially their paycheck because you have a problem with a policy they did not create.

If you don't like this system, change it. Not tipping will not change it. Not tipping is an ineffective, weak minded attempt to rebel against the prevailing wage in your state. It'll never work.
>>
I become a regular at a restaurant.
I pick a cure waitress and figure out her schedule, roughly.
Try to only go when she's working.
Tip her really well every time.
Chat yer up every time.
Within 5 to 10 visits she's asking me if I want to come have a drink with her after she gets off work.
9/10 times get laid in the first night. I've had a couple of serious relationships start this way.
I'm 45.
>>
>>734839922

I could afford paying $10 for a bottle of water. That doesn't mean I'll buy it.

>>
>>734839981
>>734840296
Also I agree with the other anon about the perks you get in most places for being a good tipper offsetting the actual extra cost. Just my opinion of course.
>>

That's okay, I don't eat out very often. I'm a bit of a control freak over my diet and macros.
>>
>>734840238
I'm already paying 7$ a fucking head for maybe an entree and then drinks? Sorry I don't give a fuck if your boss isn't paying you enough because he's a cheap fuck. But don't make me supplement someone else's shitty morals and then tell me I don't have to right to eat where I want because I'm not gonna give some bitch 20% of my bill just for carrying a fucking tray.
>>
>>734839511
None of these are good reasons to tip.

>1. The reality is that servers do not get paid very much.

This is the server's problem, not mine.

>2. I can afford it.

Just because I can afford to do something isn't a good reason to do it. I could afford to eat a $100 bill.

>3. When a server does a good job, is pleasant, friendly, accurate and efficient, I think it's good to reward that behavior.

None of this is exceptional behavior. It's the basic requirements I expect out of anyone waiting tables at a restaurant. I don't reward someone for performing the basic requirements of their job.

>4. At most of the places I eat, the servers are single mothers and I know they need the money.

Again, this is the server's problem, not mine.

>5. If you are a good tipper and go to the same places enough to be remembered, you will get the occasional perk that offsets the cost of the tip (get a double if you only order one shot, bigger portions, free dessert, whatever). Sometimes I've gotten enough "extra" food I can take it home for another two meals.

I don't go out to eat often enough that this is worth it. And in general, if you're eating out often enough to be remembered by wait staff, you could save a lot more money by learning to cook, and not having to rely on free extras.
>>
>>734840238

>If you can't afford to tip you can't afford to eat out, faggot

If he can afford to pay the bill, he can afford it.

Exactly. It's not my problem if a business doesn't pay their employees enough. That's an issue between the employee and the employer. I refuse to be drug into the middle of it.
>>
The only reason the food isnt just more expensive is because that labor cost is added after in the form of a tip. Its a stupid system but is the only reason you get good service, otherwise thoes people would get other jobs and you would get tge people who work at walmart taking your orders. And that would suck.
>>
I tip because I worked in a few restaurants as a kid and I know what bad tippers get on their return trips.
You may think your waiter or waitress won't remember you, but in fact you're the only customer they remember.
And if you leave a really shitty tip on a big bill or no tip at all you can believe the whole crew heard about it before you made it to your car.
I've seen jizz, pubes, and spit, go into the food of bad tippers. Y'all have been eating it gladly for years.
>>
>>734837911
If the service is good I tip 20%, generally.

I used to wait tables part time. The hourly wage for a waiter in the US is less than minimum wage since tipping is customary. And waiting tables is hard and often thankless work. I like to show that I appreciate good service and I like to be kind to others.

If it's a good looking girl that has the eye on me when serving me like an Egyptian god then I'll give her a tip, providing she pleasures me in the back room afterwards.
>>
>>734841009

I don't tip because of a simple cost/benefit analysis.

Sure, there's a chance that someone could spit in my food. But I don't go out to eat very often. Once a week or so generally. And I never go out to eat at the same place more than once a month. And most servers don't do that stuff to people's food for fear of being fired or worse if they're caught.

So the chances that I show up to eat there again 6 weeks later AND I get the same server AND that server remembers me and that I didn't leave a tip AND that they decide to spit in my food AND that I don't notice it is really really small. Not nearly large enough to make me pay an extra 20% for every meal I eat.
>>
>>734840660
Bad argument. They all could...yet we still need waiters so they ask can't.

They purposely get paid less than minimum because of expected tipping. If restaurants paid them better then tipping wouldn't be as appropriate. But then the increase wage cost would be carried over to the prices.
>>
>>734841258
That will cost you 25%.
>>
>>734841205
Those people dont: greet you. Tell you about a menu. Take a drink order. Bring you said drinks to where u are sitting. Answer questions. Take your order. Talk to the kitchen about ur order. Bring ur fat ass said food. Refill ur drink. Clear ur plates. Make conversation. Shit they dont even have to fucking smile.
>>
if you dont tip i assume it's because you're a sadistic fuck or actually retarded

>not understanding the government trashes server paychecks, not the company. any job in the tip industry is the same way, they trash paychecks because its near impossible to accurately show the government how much cash tips you walk away with every day

huehuehue your salary comes from my money too, you ungrateful bitch
If all the people who eat out occasionally and don't tip because they can't afford it would just stop eating at your boss'es place he would be out of business and you out of job. Tip is meant to be something extra, not regular addition to your salary.
>>
>>734841275
It's really not.
Servers talk and they talk about bad tippers. It's solidarity. The hostess saw you walk in. Remembers you as the guy that stiffed becky.
Seats you in carol's section. Goes to tell carol. Carol dips her used tampon in your soup.
For fear of getting fired? The managers of the establishment are in on it too. They're gonna side with their people over a cheap smuck like you
>>
>>734841586

>>
>>734841481

>>
>>734841597
... And they do with the expectation of the tip. Again, they are paid less purposely and legally because tipping is customary.

If you can't afford a few extra bucks for someone's hard work then maybe you should eat at home while you count your dollar bills.
>>
>>734841258

>>

Yeah, I don't really believe you. Servers and ex-servers like to perpetuate this myth because it scares people into tipping. But I worked at a restaurant in college and I only saw it happen once. I reported it and the guy got fired immediately.
>>
When I used to work in food service my restaurant had a camera pointed at the front door. If you left no tip we would print out your photo and hang it up in the kitchen

I worked at a restaurant once, spit in the food on the daily, mostly for giggles.

Fuck tipping if the cooks don't get a cut of it. The server doesn't do shit. Pours the coffee, asks you what you want, punches the order in on a computers, brings it to comes back once to ask you how it is and then takes the plates back. The coom has to prep the food, cook it, probably cuts and burns themselves a couple times a day and sweats their balls off in a hot kitchen all day.

I hated seeing servers walk out with double or more than I made while they sat in air conditioning all day rolling silverware and occasionally running food while the rest of pushed food out nonstop. The only breaks we got in our 10 hours shifts was two five minute smoke breaks a day. Don't smoke then no break for you.

TL;DR fuck tipping and fuck servers.

It was a town of 5000 people. The other 3 restaurants did the same thing. Next closest town was 30 minutes away, the cost of gas and wear and tear on the car would negate the extra wages and other jobs in the town were rare since a large factory had closed a few years prior and everyone took what they could get and kept it.

And I don't live in the States and never would.
>>
>>734841481
But I am as polite to them as they are to me. I too greet them, I smile when I talk to them, and always thank them for their service. Let me entertain you.

There was a case in the US of this Jewish cunt so cheap, she'd never tip, but always asked for delivery from a Chinese place.

Fed up with her utter rudeness and failing to realize a tipping culture is just that, a culture, the Chinese guys did something to her food.

Lo and behold, she contracted oral herpes. Now you may ask, how the fuck?

As it turns out, the food was tested. They found the semen of 4 different men in her food.

You know the likelihood of contracting and STD (such as herpes) is rather slim. She had been eating cum (among other things) for quite, quite some time.

So yeah, keep your tip, keep your change. Also keep the snot, cum, dirt, rat feces, and anything that "accidentally" makes its way into the food of non-tippers.

Just like I heard how bacon powder often made its way into pizzas ordered by non-tipping Muslims, or how kosher labels were placed on platters served to Jews.

Yup, keep the change.
>>
>>734837911
I tip because I am not a miserable shitbag. I wouldn't tip in a culture that would consider it rude.

Because only a tip salary earner have earned the right to received any tip. Since tip salary is lower than minimum wage. If you are already earning minimum wage, you have no right to a tip.

Because you paid for the food, In a togo box. You tip if it is served to you, on a table.

You should never tip anyone who is not earning a tip wage, Coat girl earns a minimum salary, doorman earns a minimum salary, cashier earns a minimum salary, barista earns a minimum salary, etc.

Only tip your wait staff since only waiters or waitress are eligible for tip wage.

Busboys, meat-runners, food-runners, hosts, bar associates, etc, all MAY fall under tip-wage earner.

It depends on the restaurant and restaurants CAN employ ALL staff as tip-wage earners and then proceed to create titles.

So you're only half right.
>>
I almost never tip when I eat out, but it's not due to any kind of malice or anything. I recognize that servers are paid shit, and I feel bad, but the simple fact is that because the establishment doesn't pay a full wage, then one of us is going to be punished, essentially. Either the server is going to get punished by not getting money, or I'm going to be punished by giving up extra money. We both have jobs and work hard for money. Because I'm not responsible for the situation being like it is and I have a choice, then I'm logically going to choose not to be punished. Sucks for the server, but that's how it is.

And on top of that, serving itself is not a hard job, and that whole excuse of 'it's such a hard job, they deserve it!' mentality drives me nuts. I've worked several customer service jobs that entail everything a server does, with the added need for specialized knowledge that required some form of education. No one has ever considered tipping me in those fields, and there are even other people who work much harder than I ever have who no one even thinks of tipping.

...but you'll go as low as justifying why a server shouldn't get a tip. I hope you die of cancer alone.
>>
>>734839707

So many of you are either ignorant or stupid. Every single person who I've ever known that has served, including myself, has been paid roughly 50% greater than minimum wage which is very suitable.

My sister gets over $100 in tips per night. Per fucking night. She makes more than $500 per week in tips just for existing in her job. She makes more than $2000 a month just for existing in her job. She's too retarded to do her job right let alone provide exceptional service. She gets the tips because sheeple think that tipping is the right thing to do or that she makes barely minimum wage and can't survive.

Still not the customers problem. No law says they have to tip.
Best way to fix it-
Customers don't tip.
Staff quit.
Restaurant increases it's pay but raises prices.
Customers stop going to restaurants that don't deserve the increased prices forcing them out of business sending more people to eat at the better/more competitive business.
End result-better food for customers, better wages for staff and better profits for owners.

I'm Europe it's just added in the bill.
In America we get to choose what to give based on the service.

I tip because it's a good motivator.

You get shit from your managers, you get shit from your customers, you are payed below minimum wage, then you have a bus come in with 18 seats a half hour before close.

Never did the job myself, but I know a lot of servers and bartenders who go through this kind of thing on a daily basis. Some make it, most don't.

It's not the work that is hard, it's the stress and pressure.
>>
>>734837911
Here over in the states is a common forum to tip or provide a "gratuity".

I only really tip if I'm at a high dollar restaurant or when I'm out with friends. I don't really eat out too much where it becomes an issue.

When I visited Europe I was told not to tip because they didnt like it.

It's pretty garbage now because every waiter and waitress expects someone to drop a $20 on a $10 meal at a fucking dennys and gets mad when you don't.

Cops in a lot of places don't make great money, but fuck their pensions are great.

Cops in my area start making $80k/yr, and easily work their way up to $200k/yr. Retire a 50, and keep 90% of their pay as pension. All in a town with .5 murders a year (yes, you read that right).

Even cops in New York make too much money through their ridiculous pension.

I call it a 'punishment' because nowhere else I go for service requires a tip out of me, only food establishments. Plenty of places give good customer service without an additional fee. Though it is admittedly not a huge sum, it's still money I worked just as hard to make that I have to give up for something nowhere else charges for. I really do feel bad that that's the state of affairs in restaurants, but I'm not related to the cause of it at all, so i exercise my right to choose not to.

No, but there are laws that saw the restaurant doesn't have to pay them minimum wage. If they get rid of these laws, the situation will work it self out. Your way won't work because people are selfish.
>>
>>734844869
No one in the US legally makes less than minimum wage at the end of the pay period.

A waiter is allowed to make no less than like $2.36 (depends on the state), and then are required to report their tips. If their hourly tips bring their wage up to minimum wage, then great. If it's a super slow day and there are no tips, then the employer is required to pay minimum wage.

The problem is that most waiters at any place with customers won't report their tips so that they don't have to pay taxes/ "deal with the paperwork."

I have a loser "buddy" who never went to college and makes $40k a year as a waiter. He's been working their for 1 year, and probably making just over minimum wage. At 40 hours a week, he must be making $20k a year in tips.

Of course he bitches that he's not making that much money, but he can make 6 figures when he invests as much time as a doctor or lawyer.

>>
>>734845048
Yes, the employer only pays $2-4, but if tips DON'T compensate the remainder to fulfill minimum wage, the employer is REQUIRED to pay it.

Regardless of how much their hourly rate is, they will be making AT LEAST minimum wage at the end of the pay period. But how many waiters really want to report their tips? Because most times (at any relatively busy establishment) waiters earn more than minimum wage through tips.

No restaurant would be able to stay in business without the tip system.

Frankly, you can make any job sound just as stressful as that when you write it all out. It's not a uniquely difficult enough job to demand tipping extra simply on that merit

Fun fact: most restaurants require servers to tip out a percentage of the bill to the back of house. If you dont tip then the server effectively has to pay money to serve you.
>>
>>734846649
I tip, but a commission is a very divergent thing from a tip. It is usually an actual, contractual percentage payout from a listed sale value. The purchaser is completely unaware of your commission percentage - you can give all the shit service you want, but make the sale and you get a commission.

ANYONE can be a waiter. You don't even have to speak fucking English (go to a Vietnamese restaurant). If you can hold a dish (even in a wheelchair), and remember orders, you're in.
>>
>>734846865
>It's not a uniquely difficult enough job to demand tipping extra simply on that merit

That I do agree with you. Even though I had been a busboy and a waiter back in the early 90's (earning more than what they are earning now) and do agree the entire tipping culture is wrong. The burden of compensation should be the employer and not the customer directly. Tipping prevent the employer from rewarding employee for good work. Restaurant should all adjust their pricing to reflect adjustment for the service provided. Since I really hate those automatic 18% party of 5 and above charges.
>>
>>734837911
Depends highly on the establishment.

I have a regressive tipping scheme that the lower the cost of the food, the higher percentage i tip.

In immigrant owned places that generally have lower cost meals I may tip between 50% and 100%. I am always treated with respect and feel more like an old friend than a customer. We can talk about the world, how we are both doing, and have a real conversation. These people work hard and over all get treated as third class citizens, you cannot earn a living where i reside on just pay from wait-staffing without tips.

As the cost goes up, or they are a reservation only establishment my tip percentage goes down. Most of these places can afford to pay their staff more than the legal minimum, and a lot of people equate the fancy trappings to require more tip instead of the quality of food and service so the individuals waiting on me in general bring in a pretty generous tip portion per night.
>>
>>734839976

You stole this out of my playbook. You can snag strippers the same way.

One trick is to get a seat at the bar by the cash register or by where servers pick up their drinks. Lots of face time, chances to chat, etc...

I worked in restaurant working up from dish washer to waitress, to eventually a cook of sorts.

Either way you still pull 8h+ days, stay well after midnight to get the place ready for opening the next day. You are always moving, and never sit down.

Its hard work and a lot of people make light of it for some reason.

I never resented my blue collar jobs for the work, or even the limited pay.

Whats bothersome to me now is as a white collar employee i sit in a cube for 8 hours a day, do almost nothing intrinsically instantly meaningful, and no longer get to see the sun + i have to sit in a car stuck in traffic 3 hours a day to get to/from work. The pays many multiples higher, but man its a grind.

right now i'm in negotiation for moving cubes to another building that has windows.

I'm like 1/3 of the way through life and i have no idea what i want to do or what i want to be when i "grow up". One day I will come to a "fuck it" moment and just walk out and take a vacation.

Ive applied for companies in other countries that do more exciting things as an idea to see the world as well.

I only tip taxi drivers because I don't want change, wallet becomes too heavy.
And I also tip my tattoo artist.

There is a difference between being a bad boss and being "abusive". When you work in the government and everyone is incompetent and tenured, the hardworkers quit. As the saying goes, "fuck up, move up." I quickly learned that trying to fix people's work ethic and improper adherence to procedure was a recipe for complaints.
>>
>>734849841
How often do you get a tatoo? lol
>>
>>734849839
that's another good idea. Less catastrophic as well. Just be careful you don't take too long to "grow up" and miss the last stop. seen it happen a few times and it's never pretty

I got 16 right now. Most of my torso and arms, few on legs.

Yes, but offering a bounty get someone fired someone is an extreme example.

In the real world, especially in the professional and college educated world, people can't take being yelled at. Any time someone comes in and shakes up the status quo, the complaints come out to protect their own phony-baloney jobs.

>As the saying goes, "fuck up, move up."

It's codified as "The Peter Principle".

>Tough shit. Owning a profitable restaurant is one of the hardest things in the world. It's a hard and fast paced environment,

You are absolutely correct.

>but it isn't skilled.

Business management, marketing, budgeting and balancing, PR, logistic and inventory management, maintenance, etc. And I haven't even mentioned the staff of the customer.

To run a profitable restaurant well takes some skills, sometime.

>If you can't handle "abuse," then you need to leave the industry forever.

>I have been accused of "abuse" (mainly by blacks and women, or any diversity hire) in my career, but that's just the things ways need to be run.

>Just like with the military, if you can't hack it, it's a problem with YOU, not the leadership.

Yes. A restaurant is about exactly that. It is about working as a team to achieve the common goal. And not a place of "fun". Getting shit done in a timely manner shouldn't be that difficult. Regardless of your complexion.

Built fat I guess, I do lift weights. And I love them and the attention i get. No problems with employment either in my field. Not disclosing it tho.
>>
Amen. Yes it can take skills, but for anyone other than the owner, or general manager, there is no work that gets brought home with you.

You work your shift and get to go home and drink/bitch about your shitty job.

Doctors, lawyers, and business owners go home with work on their mind or in their hands, and goes to sleep worried about being sued. Waiters do not deserve to be paid anywhere near what these people make.

Thank you. I don't know why so many people are arguing with me about this.

Seriously, introducing women into the work force has made everyone pussies.

If I yell, it's not personal. It's because you WON'T DO YOUR FUCKING JOB.

If you don't want to tip, don't eat in restaurants. Bam. /thread

>If I yell, it's not personal. It's because you WON'T DO YOUR FUCKING JOB.

I was in the military at a very young age so this does make sense. As I moved on into more white collar jobs, I found more creative ways of getting my point across. That being said, if I ran across somebody's mistake, I'd say 'WTF' in voice loud enough for the entire team to hear which would put the fear of the lord into everyone thinking they might be the guilty party.

It's so companies can get away with paying their employees jack shit while making even more money off their overpriced food.
>>
I live in New Zealand, tipping isn't super common here due to minimum wage being pretty good, and it's just not part of our culture.

I've only ever tipped 1 place, and i go there when ever i visit my home town.

It's a small thai shop, all the employees are dressed nice (always uniform, clean, not revealing) they're always nice and super helpful.

and the food is amazing, when i first went there i was expecting a $100+ bill for myself alone, it was honestly the best food ive had but it was something like $22 for main, drink and dessert. plus portions where large. I tip $60 each time i go, $30 for waiter, $30 for chef

Right. You get herpes from skin-to-skin contact, not from semen.
>>
>>734847446
Denny's makes a decent breakfast for after a night of drinking hard. It's bacon eggs and toast man, ain't paying $30 for that at some pretentious douchebag 5 star place.

>What if I am a postman? I want my tips too

Actually, it used to be not uncommon that the postman, milkman, doorman would get an envelope at Christmas for their service.
>>
>>734850613
>If you don't want to tip, don't eat in restaurants.

You an idiot for real, or what?
I don't go to a restaurant because I want to tip.
I go to a restaurant because I want to eat.

Also, you can't /thread your own post, so you are double retarded.
>>
>>734837911
If you really can't stand tipping, don't eat out. It's cheaper and healthier to cook your own shit.
>>
>>734849371
>-I was using "anyone" in the ethereal sense. Obviously not just anyone can waltz into a restaurant and get handed a notepad. It was up to you understand this.

I did my share in my much younger years.

I don't have to do that shit now.

>Clearly you are cut out to be a waiter.

You are right, at least up until when I was 18, and once I earned enough to pay for my tuition. I was out. Never had to ask for a handout or needing to lean back on a student loan and never expecting my family or anyone else to pay for it.

I now do the same job my father did. He was a Marine in Vietnam before college, so that's where he got his attitude from. He passed it to me at a young age any time I fucked up.

I was threatened with disinheritance if I joined before college, and by the time I graduated I would have been 30 by the time I got out of the service.

So I went straight to work. I always remembered him coming home with his performance review, cracking 6 beers, and laughing about it over it during dinner (as my mother sat worried whether he'd lose his job; he never did).

> Difficult to work with
> Aggressive
> Upholds a hostile work environment
> Excessive use of the term "chucklefuck"
> Refuses to speak to interns
> Calls Asian Information Management Officers "Kwan Lee"
> AID Mission Director "needs to get a real fucking job"

Every fucking year it was a new list.

I suppose that's why I got to his position much quicker than he did. But once I got there, holy fuck did I turn into my dad. I get the same reviews now and laugh about them because I know I'm not the one fucking up.
