I was on the freeway, passenger seat. We were going under a bridge. Driver side roof suddenly collapses in, driver (coworker) suddenly has a funny shaped bloody head on a no spine neck, danging around. Stunned, I just stare at him. Look to see his car, the car I am IN, moving towards pillar of next bridge. I reach to grab the wheel. Next memory is being revived in the ER. I found out it was some jumper that landed on my coworker's car. 4 people died then, I saw one of them. 2 critically injured, I was one. 2 cars hit the car I was in when it crashed. From what I understand of the wreck, I was lucky to the max to live. The car I was in was a tumbling mess of twisted metal. I wasn't even wearing a seat belt. My best mate Alex was hit by an IED in 2008 and I managed to talk to him until he was airlifted back to Bastion, he was in a bad way physically but was chatty and appeared to be able to survive having one leg and a foot blown off, he died in the Chinook on the way there, some shrapnel had caused a bleed in his abdomen and when they released his clothing and armour the bleeding began in earnest and by the time they spotted it he was dead.

Yeah, a few. I had just turned 18 and went to a pub where I grew up. Group of guys got into a fight and one got knocked out, fell down, hit his temple on a pool table and died on the spot.

A hard one was when I was younger and tried to rescue an indian tourist who couldn't swim and got caught in a rip with his kids. The rip went around a breakwall into the river mouth when the tide was going high and was dangerous for anyone to near. Managed to get the kids back to the beach but couldn't find the dad. Ended up finding his body and swam down and brought his body back to the beach. Tried to give CPR until an ambulance arrived but he was announced dead on the beach. That was pretty heavy.

I'm not entirely sure what rate of survival is when its down to compressions, but I don't think he lived. Could be wrong. It's about the closest I've ever been to seeing someone *possibly* die in real life.

Someone from out of the city had fallen into the city river, drunk of course since there was a music festival going on at the time. There were paramedics trying to revive him at the riverbank and a lot of people spectating the act from the nearby bridge. Blood slowly started to pool around his face down head. I couldn't stop looking. On the way out of the mall 3 nuns decked out in all white passed me on their way in. Crazy shit!

EMT here. Had quite a bit in the field, cardiac arrests, MVCs and such. In my personal life I was there when my exes dad passed away from cancer. Had the same thing happen with my current gf when her mom passed from cancer too. As much as you see in my job, watching the life leave the eyes of someone you know personally and seeing them turn that pale gray color is a little unnerving.
