Second: to answer the sentiment in your question, I would venture that its because these people don't see the big picture, or see it from a point of view which hides some important aspects. Namely, if someone sees their check being drained for taxes, but can't afford rent, its easy to see how negative connotations could form.

Remove the paychecks from everyone involved. Make it a true volunteer system.
Have committees dedicated to making sure that those politicians who are volunteering their time are not getting side kickbacks for their votes, even years later when they leave office.
Install mandatory term limits for every politician at all levels of government - do not let one person's ideological beliefs become the set standard that is in place and allow it to stay long enough to become entrenched.
Make it easier to start the process of recalls or impeachment for all politicians who fail in their jobs regardless of their personal beliefs - they are not there for themselves, they are there for us. They need to be reminded of this more than ever.
