There's always a place in the energy industry. Biofuels is emerging, and algae is a promising source. But you probably already know that. Point blank, though, oil and gas isn't going anywhere soon. Low risk there.

Addendum,

There's a lot being done in data gathering and modeling now in chem-e, but the theory is largely established. I'd go so far as to say that there haven't been significant developments in solution thermodynamics, phase equilibria, etc in the last 40 yrs.
