One thing I can think of is that it's one of the last vestiges of fluffy ponies' /mlp/ origin.

Did a bit of looking around and the term "alicorn" as referring to a winged unicorn first appeared in a fantasy novel by Piers Anthony first published in 1984. Sometime before that, it simply referred to the horn of a unicorn. As to when the definition changed, nobody really knows.
