Hey guitar fags, I want to buy a 2016 Les Paul standard T in

Hey guitar fags, I want to buy a 2016 Les Paul standard T in Light Burst but I don't know how I'm gonna buy it. I've heard some horrid stories about buying Guitars online and I want to see the guitar before I buy but most of the guitar stores around me don't stock Gibsons. What do?
>>
Then go to a shop that does?
>>
Use Sweetwater
>>
>>733842017
The guitar center that does carry them doesn't stock the one I want and if I end up ordering it through them I still won't be able to actually play the guitar before buying
>>
>>733840795
DONT. Take your time, look for a used one in pawn shops/music stores/possibly even craigslist... I have played for over 20 years, and owned about 30 guitars, most of the time as a Gibson guy, but over the last decade, Gibson has been shit for QC, and that scale length neck/neck angle has inherent problems as it is, they are all more temperamental tuning wise than Fenders... after the last $1300 Gibson I got and returned, I've shifted more towards Fenders... Get a used one in good shape, that you can check out in person, you'll save money, and get a better instrument, just look up how to spot fakes...
>>
>>733840795
You literally have to play every Gibson in a store to find a good one. No lie, any Gibson owner will tell you if one chimes in here. I don't own one. I would go with ESP, very consistent and reliable. On a budget? ESP ltd then. I've used mine to practice, record and gig. Had strings on it for 2 years gigging every weekend. Never broke a one. Progressive metal band too.
>>
Judging on your writing, I'd say you haven't been playing for long. If that is really the case, I recommend you not getting a brand new gibson. Maybe try a used one first or look for epiphone models etc. It really is worth a try.
>>
>>733842479
Can't you ask them to get one in?
>>
>>733842721
Ignore this oldfag and use Sweetwater. They do actual quality control, instead of just pretending to like GC. And your instrument will be properly set up so you won't have to spend another $40 taking that same guitar back to wherever you got it to make it play well
>>
>>733840795
Don't get so hung up on one guitar or brand. Go play a bunch and buy the one that plays the best for you. You'll probably be surprised at the one you end up with.
>>
>>733843226
You work for sweet water or something. That's the most cucked advice I've ever seen. Gibbons are just over priced brand name bullshit, no matter where you go to get it. The most inconsistent build of an instrument ever.
>>
>>733840795
If you have that much money to blow on buying a standard then lets be honest, its only gonna be a matter of time before you buy one anyway. The only thing is getting one that you want, the flame tops can vary wildly, the weight can even vary by quite a bit. Take your time.

Also +1 for sweetwater, but its only 2 hours drive for me from ohio so id shop online first, then go look at it before i'd buy.
>>
>>733843082
You're right I've only been playing for 3 years now but I've played long enough to know I want to keep playing. I've had an epiphone for two years now and it's literally fallen apart. I just want this to be one of the last guitars I buy so It has to be perfect.
>>
>>733843226
Sweetwater is good. But Gibsons are notorious. There are many advantages to buying used. The moisture in the wood has had time to......stabilize...meaning the instrument is where its going to be...
> They do actual quality control
they do an inspection, and if they have to set ups, but why should they have to, especially for a 'high end' manufacturer like Gibson? makes you wonder....

Every instrument has it's own personality, you have to search to find the good ones, especially with Gibsons though...

If you really have to have a new Les Paul, there is a '60's tribute out that is like half the cost of the traditional...still a gamble though. Elektra (one of the best Pauls I've owned was an old Omega) and Hagstrom have some Paul based models that are very good, and cost way less as well...
>>
>>733843890
I'd take 3 or 4 "budget" priced guitars over an over priced Gibson, but i would love a Gibson one day.
>>
>>733840795
Buy a Chinese fake and put some decent pickups in it, if it's shit who cares you spent 300 bucks, after take some time and look around in guitar store
>>
>>733843890
Well that's your decision which model you buy, but may I ask why this one in particular?
>>
>>733842479
i think they, GC, have a pretty good return policy. especially now for holiday sales. one can buy online and return in-store. amirite?
>>
>>733840795
Prepare yourself for a heavy fucking piece of lumber.
>>
>>733843890
You will own several guitars as a true guitarist. I own 3 classicals, 1 twelve string acoustic, 1 regular acoustics and 5 electric guitars. 3 combo amps and 3 half stacks. Two pedal boards with of pedals and I've sold some amps before I bought my house. My favorite guitar is the cheapest one I bought used on Craigslist. Life is funny sometimes.
>>
>>733844142
Ya get a nice comfy wide as possible strap for it.
>>
>>733844142
this is true, and it is only annoying if you are a shoulder-less lightweight yourself. I mean 10lbs isn't all that much and you don't wear out unless you are playing marathon gigs.
>>
>>733844381
word 'em up.
>>
>>733840795
>I've heard some horrid stories about buying Guitars online
Don't ever buy a guitar you haven't played
>>
>>733842479
>>733844141
Guitar center is the worst. That company is reprehensible.
>>
>>733843890
As you develop as a player you might find the guitar you thought perfect doesn't suit you any more. Take your time, find a second hand one. Play a few, get a friend who knows about guitars to check them over for you.
>>
>>733844133
Im a huge Jimmy Page fan so I've always fantasized about having a Gibson Les Paul. The light burst looks a lot like his, the asymmetrical slim taper neck seems comfortable, and the electronics are pretty versatile with coil taps, a phase switch, and a natural bypass.
>>
>>733844735

It's semi affordable compared to vintage stuff but it also has modern electronics and weight relief. Gibson quality has severely declined in the past couple of years but if you have any other suggestions I would love to hear.

I keep hearing this and it seems to have been a common refrain since the '70s. "Artists" started playing Yamaha, Ibanez, etc.
I dunno man. Any ol guitar made on a Friday might have issues. Also consider today's workforce. Ish! Gotta play em all.
>>
>>733845786
some dude mentioned a tele and gave me a half chub. i'd start there
>>
>>733845645
wow, I love the esquire. i used to have a reissue i traded for an old guild polara, but i never should have traded it... that is awesome. i have an old duo sonic which is my current 'student' guitar of the collection, but it's nowhere near as sweet as your esquire...
>>
>>733845490
I wish! Almost all of Zeppelin was recorded with a tele. But I really admire Page's live stuff, so powerful and most of it was done with his Number 1.
>>
>>733843082
This.
>>
>>733846220
if you really wanted to go for the page thing, you could get a Supro and a std tele and upgrade the pickups for about the same price as the Les paul...
>>
>>733845530
I have a decent amp. Marshall dsl40c. Pretty good for practice and small gigs.
>>
>>733846175
Duo's are awesome. My complaint witth student guitars are the small frets. I am committing some dollars to the Esquire for a fret and nut job. Then some new pickups are in order because my dog ate the stock one while it was out of the guitar laying on my bed. Been on the hunt for proper pickups ever since.
Your Duo may well be more enjoyable than that Esq.
>>
>>733846433
Yes! Supro's are a force to be reckoned with, but they are pretty expensive.
>>
>>733840795
OP, why a 2016?
You can still find some 70's stock for under $2K. Why 2016?
>>
>>733846539
yeah it is a short scale but the pickups are unreal.
>>
>>733846800
Modern benefits. And where can I find those under 2k?
>>
>>733847030
I found mine at GC for 1600. No case, mais waaah, but it vibrated much more than the new stuff I played there. hate to say Reverb dot com but they're there. No local shops in your area that will hunt one down for you?
when i was a youngster I got a shop to hunt down an SG Custom for me.

The main thing I'm worried about is the finish because they vary so much. So I'll definitely take my time and look around my local shops to see if I can find anything I like. My last resort will be ordering from GC and just getting it correctly setup there and if that doesn't work out multiple Anons said they had a great return policy.

I have a couple of strats (one '15 am std/rosewood, one early 2000's/mex/maple), a '03 tele, old '70s Japan 'lawsuit' Les Paul by elektra, '90s SG standard, a Sheraton and a Casino (both MIK), an old ibanez Ar-200 (one of the best guitars i've ever owned), an explorer...guild polara from the '90s, kramer baretta, restoring a jazzmaster, and building a partscaster (which at this point is just a procrasticaster). i don't play out anymore, so ampwise i just have an old '60s champ and a marshall class 5, i also have a deluxe reverb and pretty soon i'm going to get one of those new jc-40s
acoustics - mid 70's guild classical, a guild 12 string..a seagull sws.
basswise, i have a hofner , a mustang, a thunderbird and an upright.

that strat you linked is cool.

If you want to feel like you're covering all bases (electric wise), you can pretty much do it with 3 guitars, one with humbuckers, one with singles and a hollow or semi hollow of some kind...

Their tone is unique. I'm not saying there not overpriced but you cant get the les paul tone out of a prs, or an esp... you get the prs and esp tone.
>>
I will never understand why people blast Gibson for being overpriced when Fender charge you just as much for a simple parts bolt on guitar with no top or binding made in Mexico and ASSEMBLED in the USA for just as much.
>>
>>733856624
>>733856829

Every instrument is different. Setup has way more to do with it than you may think, also. There's definitely MIJ/MIM instruments that are better than some US fenders out there, but as a whole? '90s Korean Epiphones were not better as a whole than '90's Gibsons, but some were and compared to what Gibson is putting out now, definitely on a level... Outliers factor in...as does the psychology of brand names and image/ego projection.
>>
>>733857507
Now THIS is false. MOST of tone is from the pickups and wiring, and the very small % that isn't is negligible. Period.
>>
>>733857683
>Fender charge you just as much
Nope.
>simple parts bolt on guitar
yet, somehow, Fenders have way less issues and consistently higher quality than Gibsons.
>>
>>733858064
Yes indeed. Every month I go to my local guitar store and try out guitars, usualy SG's because I'm a sucker for SG's. Now I would say that one in four SG's are a bit poor. The others are great and the thing is Epiphones have the same shit to good ratio. I feel with a lot of the people that complain about Gibsons must have bought them without playing them. And if they did play them why didn't the fucking notice the problems and ask for another one?
>>
>>733858235
Tone is in the fingers, shitstain. Everyone know this.
>>
>>733858235
Nope. Got a epi sg with gibson pups and wiring and a real gibson sg and the gibson destroys it. Why not play an electric acoustically for once you idiot. The gibsons are sooooo much more resonant. But hey I guess that means nothing. I often think that some people don't have good enough hearing to play guitar.
>>
>>733858802

Tone is in the pickups and the amp, and to a lesser degree, the signal chain. The amp itself is almost as important if not as important an instrument as the guitar.

Communicable emotion is in the playing (or fingers). Don't confuse feeling with physics.

Shitstain.
>>
>>733858468
Ahem current USA strats are MORE than an traditional les paul.

Also of course they have less issues its like saying a ford truck has less issues than a ferrari. The fender is so simple anyone can make one. You have to be a real simpleton to fuck up a fender. Meanwhile a gibson les paul has a MAPLE TOP which requries more TIME and skill to make. Equally the nitro take more TIME and SKILL to use. Same with the binding. Also again its your own fault if you buy a broken gibson. How can you blame a company for selling a broken product when you yourself bought a broken product like an utter cunt.
>>
>>733858802
>Tone is in the fingers
what are you talking about you dumb nigger. cut up your fingers a little before you come into a guitar thread.
>>
Also anyone that says you can get an Angus Young tone with a strat is wrong. Anyone who says you can get the Jimmy Page tone with a strat is wrong. If you cant tell the difference it means you ears are shit.
>>
>>733859282
Ahem, NO, they arent. Am standards were like 1200 or 1300, they were replaced by the Am professionals which are like 1500... Les paul standards are like 2200...and the traditionals are like 2000...
as far as you ford/ferrari nonsense goes, that's a total false equivalency.
> How can you blame a company for selling a broken product
when is this ever acceptable, let alone at their pricepoint?
ridiculous...
>>
And while we are at it those that argue that a PRS is better than a gibson because it is more stable what kind of fag are you? Its a guitar not a fucking bridge! "PRS come setup straight out the box" - Pointless gimmick. If your not setting it up to your specs your not a serious musician so fuck off. Also "Gibsons go out of tune" again nope my gibson lasts at least 5 songs in tune. Sure I bet the PRS would last for 10 but thats meaningless in the context. And "gibsons headstocks snap when you drop them" WELL THEN DONT DROP YOUR GUITAR YOU FUCKING IDIOT. Its like complaining your iphone broke when you drop it. OF COURSE IT DID. ... anyway I'm not a gibson fanboy, I own both gibsons, fenders and prs its just it pisses me off that people attack gibson for trivial meaningless complaints.
>>
>>733858963
good grief, you're probably one of those 'tonewood' people, huh?

OK lucky you but where I live the Am professionals are 1400 and the gibson trads are 1499. So essentially the same. And lets not forget that the fender mexicans are almost identicle in quality to the US ones. Company with a broken product? Well microsoft is an example. Also only SOME of gibsons are poorly made and as I said its your own fault if you buy one.

I agree with you with image. But if you cannot tell the difference between a PRS for example and a Gibson your clearly not experienced or listening enough. Woods do make SOME difference not lots but some. A mahogany guitar will ALWAYS sound different from a maple for example.
>>
>>733859252
No.

Very well written retort though. I'll grant you that.

Shitstain.
>>
>>733860146
first you specify les paul traditional. then you move the goalpost to 'gibson trads'...
and none of that really matters anyways because, how is 1400 more than 1499?
MIM fenders are not 'almost identical' at all either...many differences (sustain block, trem, electronics, frets and on and on)....
>>
>>733859391
It is.

You'll learn it someday.
>>
I presume the "woods make no difference" crowd have one basswood superstrat with dust inbetween the pickups and a line 6 amp. As someone that owns 5 strats of 3 different woods its postively retarded to assert wood makes no difference. Does a rosewood fretboard sound warmer than a maple one? No a centimeter of wood wont do much but a mahogany body is completely different to an alder one.
>>
>>733858235

I purchased my Tele in 2001 from a local shop. I had owned previously a Hondo ll Les Paul, a Fender Squire strat in 1985, and a year later bought my first professional one, a G&L Invader.

Gibson SG 1970-72 purchased in 1988, StewMac custom built Strat in 1994 with DiMarzios, and then the Tele.

The Telecaster was one of 5 or 6 that the guitar shop had, all made in Mexico. I didn't plug in, I tried a couple of picks and a longer time with my fingers, all of them.

One just sang and resonated, chimed harmonics, lasting chords, fluid full sounding bends acoustically. The body weight was heavier, and the neck was just a great maple fingerboard on a tonally amazing maple neck.

Wood matters more to your sound than you know. Plugged in to a vintage tube amp (2x12) or a simple ART preamp/Yorkville poweramp/4x12 cabinet. I love its playability and the tones it creates.

Play many guitars with your hands and ears before investing. Good luck and thanks for reading.

>>
>>733860797
1. Gibson lp trad is a gibson lp traditional you fool.
2. 1400 to 1499 is hardly a difference considering the fender is worth 350. AND dont even get me started on relic strats or the AMVRI.
3. MIM fenders are very very similar and if you had worked on many examples of both you would know this. Also nope, electronics different brand but same design of pots, wires are identicle. Frets- A thing of preference and they are made out of literally the same material in the same factory for usa and mex

You're out of your goddamn mind.
>gibsons
hand built from mahogany and maple in a workshop in USA
>fenders
manufactured with a cnc machine out of crap ass alder in a factory in mexico or California if you want to end up paying more that for a gibson.

You had me at Marshall.

JCM DSL or is it the new Vietnamese made DSL? No judgement against it, I have one of the new DSL100H models and it's actually a superb head...a couple of the JCM era and a TSL from around '03 which has become a pet ongoing project for me, if you will

I also really love the TSL.

so much this.

be patient OP and look for one on the second hand market. You'll find one for half what you'd pay new, or you might even get lucky and find an old one that's significantly undervalued.

I don't know why people buy new guitars. They need more setting up/adjustment as the wood takes a few years to settle in, and you lose at least 1/3 of it's value as soon as you buy it and make it 'second hand'. You're much better off buying second hand and saving that money instead of losing it. Also if you get a vintage Gibson at the right price you'll never lose money on it.

My aplogies, you are correct I accidentily misstyped "a". Again please accept my full and frank apology. You see normally I wouldn't put "a" in front of "your" however I'm afraid on that occasion I did indeed put an "a". There is no excuse and there was no need for the "a". I realise that this thread has been one of excellent grammar and highly intelligent conversation and in such a context my "a" really has ruined everything. Sorry everyone.
>>
>>733864453
You're welcome. I do a lot of buying/selling to build my collection, and it basically comes down to 'it pays to know your shit'

if you keep an eye on the market, see what people are asking, and what people are actually paying, for certain items, then you get a good sense of that item's actual market value at present. Some people are just bad at selling, don't know what they have/don't bother to look it up, or aren't willing to clean an instrument and get a few simple things fixed prior to selling - leaving them at a bargaining disadvantage.

It possibly sounds ruthless, but if someone's willing to sell something cheap I am perfectly willing to take advantage of that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOeV1xh_S-E

>>733864688
yeah, but there's something about seeing your actual guitar in a video clip from 35+ years ago, seeing some of the wear marks the last owner put on it, and knowing how much you've played it since then for it to look like it does now.
>>
>>733843890
I would definitely look into a used les paul before springing for a brand new one. You can get one for probably 3/4 the price and if you shop around you can find one that is basically mint condition. Me personally, I would go with a telecaster over a les paul.

Listen to everyone in the thread man. 3 years isn't really enough time to commit to buying a Gibson. Take your time to try many guitars, look into midrange priced stuff. As your style progresses you'll start to realize what it is you really are looking for. You might find one day you have this amazing gibson and its really not what you're looking for.

When i had been playing for 3 years it was a dream to have a real gibson les Paul, now I'm coming in around 10 years and I'm glad i never got one, because really they're just not what i need, and it was mostly the aesthetic that drew me in.

If you're willing to invest in a guitar do as I did and get a US PRS. I bought this one 5 years ago and each other guitar I've touched has had nothing on the feel of this

Don't. SE's are shit foreign garbage. Go US for PRS. I posted my blue custom 24 just above this. Dont get an SE

I've never been a big fan of PRS. I find the chord sound lacks clarity to my ears, and the overall feel is nothing special to me.
Good guitars, but certainly not for everyone.
