There was a huge difficulty in making the return flight possible because getting enough fuel for a large shuttle to escape the moon would be too heavy so they made the lander a flimsy little thing to save on weight. the gold foil and foil tape is to protect against solar radiation frying the electronics and astronauts. They literally couldn't afford to make it sturdy enough to look good and have proper insulation and ceramic panels over it all so they gutted it until it just housed the necessary things.
