It was that awkward transition period between 2D and 3D, revolutionary for the time but hopelessly outdated now. The earlier generations have much better 2D games and the later generations have much better 3D games that hold up.

You are partially right, all those "transition games" really aged like cheese instead of wine. Playing FFVII or Tekken3 now is basically eye torture, and I loved them. But there were many proper 2D games for PS that still hold up. Like older FF titles, or FFT, god I love me some FFT, of SF Alpha 3, I could play that now for a couple of hours if I had friends.

It's super polarizing for me. I still believe Mario party 3, Ocarina of Time, pokemon stadium 2, Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Fox 64, F Zero X and Final Fantasy 7 are some of the best games of all time, even without my nostalgia goggles.

However, about 75% of the games made during this time also sucked horribly. Wonderful gems came out during this time but was also flooded with stupid shit too. Sorry for not naming PS games, I never owned a PS1 but I heard great things about Crash, Tomb Raider and Spyro.

I played the fuck out of Doom on ps1. it was like my first online game because my friends would bring over their ps1's and we'd link them and drag every TV in the house into the living room and deathmatch each other for hours. Fucking hulking CRTVs balancing on two rickety kitchen stools with like a fucking huge gap between them. We also had this small black and white TV that had to sit on the floor and it became the punishment TV. whoever got last place had to lie down all awkward on their belly and try to play holding a controller with their head six inches from that little tv.

Emus are good for games that you can't find though, configuring a controller is a must. While most people configure an Xbox controller because Microsoft provides the drivers, I put some extra effort in to get a PS3 controller working. Though the way the triggers bend down doesn't feel right for some PS1 games. There are also adapters that allow you to use a PS1 controller into a USB slot. I got one originally to convert my PS3 racing wheel for use on my Xbox 360, but an added bonus was it also has DS controller support. I haven't used that function yet though, mainly because I still have a working PS2 and plenty of PS1 and PS2 games and the original controllers. Maybe I'll go looking for a game I don't have and test it. It's been a while since I've used any PS emus. Last I tried, they all sucked, but that was years ago.

I have learned to enjoy PSX with an Xbox controller, but you are correct. I still have a working last gen playstation somewhere, but I do love having the choice of everything. If I ever have money again, I'll likely get a usb ps setup going, or just mod a playstation

Let's plays can be good for games that you suck at, games that you don't own but are considering owning, different types of gameplay that you might not get into, (my computer is junk and I like watching some heavily modded GTA and Elder Scrolls for example) or sometimes the player is just funny as fuck. (such as ProtonJon raging at Mario rom hacks or DashieGames excessive swearing) Then again, most of these examples I'm giving are less of a playthrough of the entire game and more of a unique experience designed for that player and other things I like are multiplayer interactions, like seeing a huge group of people as a crew on Star Citizen or people patrolling on the GTA 5 LSPDFR mod.

I forgot to mention that I also find out about some games through various Youtuber's. I likely wouldn't have heard about Hello Neighbor at all if it wasn't for them and now I closely follow all the builds and still watch because sometimes they find secrets that I never would have though of. Another thing is there are certain glitches I never would have thought of if it wasn't for Youtube. For example, with a whole lot of watching and research I was able to find out that north of the main city map in NFS Carbon are all of the individual canyon tracks, and there are tutorials on how to get to them and drive on them and how to have police chases there. (Which you normally can't do.) So some games I don't own, some I decide to own because of the gameplay videos and other I learn more about and they enhance my experience of the game. The only thing I would not like to do is ruin a blind playthrough of an adventure or shooter game. It's better to not know where the enemies are or what is going to happen unless you get absolutely stuck. Star Trek Bridge Crew comes out at the end of this month. I don't want to know how the missions turn out at all, so I actively avoid those videos other than the basic concept videos that told me how the game worked. I'm interested and don't want to spoil the unknown so I stay away from that.

That's a shame. My neighbor and I played through all of Reach and part of 1. We plan on doing the rest, and while you can do that sort of thing online, there is something about being in the same room helping your communication and making a playthrough an all nighter, taking a break to run down to the convenience store for snacks at 2 in the morning. Im not trying to be that cynic that cries "EVARYTHING SUCKS NAO" but now that gaming is really engrained in mainstream pop culture, theres so many people interested in a piece of the pie money wise, and dont care about anything else, like making an enjoyable product, instead following trends.

I think it reaches critical mass stupidity when Tekken 6 (one of the foremost multiplayer focused games) scraps the main story mode for the scenario campaign mode, then forces multiplayer on that to be online rather than local coop.

These design decisions are blatant attempts to follow mainstream trends like Halo and Call of Duty have (Look guys, Tekken has online multiplayer two, were still relevant, buy our game)

And these decisions just ended up hurting them by alienating existing fans.

All tekken games released since tekken 6 have been commercial successes, but the online failed, and got shut down. The dumb customise options and collectibles and tiers just turned the game into boring, storyless filler for those games

Really glad they seem to care more about tekken 7, money in that game is used on the art and cinematics gallery, which is full of awesome stuff now, and belongs to the soul of the games since the first, rather than dumb customisation options that artificially lengthen the game

I think tag works better local too. You can communicate when to tag out a lot easier than over mics that have a slight lag. Speaking of lag, a lot of fighting games have to allow the player to simulate lag while playing offline so they can be ready for online. I know all of the really good tournaments still have local without the lag, and I won't say that having online multiplayer is bad. I met a lot of people that I regular game with due to online. I think local is most important for those friends who don't own the game or the console. Companies therefore take local multiplayer away saying that if you want to play the game with your friend you need to buy a console and the game. For a market standpoint, I can understand that, but I will again point out that sometime if you can show a friend a game with local multiplayer, they might enjoy it enough to buy it themselves anyway.

Yeah, I can see your point. I watch a lot of Super Mario Maker, and GTA 5, yet I don't own either game. I do want to get GTA 5, but I need to work on getting a better computer first. I could go console, but some games are so much better with mods from the community and GTA is definitely one of those games. Mario Maker is more fun to watch because people make absolute trollish levels and it's funny to watch other people get mad while playing those levels. I don't see myself getting a Wii U despite a few games being fun looking, none of the games push me into buying the console.

No, sorry if I wasnt clear, the normal local multiplayer was still there, but they introduced something called scenario campaign, which was the main focus for the game

All character unlocking and story mode was moved there, and it was basically a glorified tekken force mode, and most of the time spent on tekken 6 will probably be playing this mode to unlock everything

Considering that they nerfed the normal arcade mode and made this the main mode with more options, you would think that they would have local multiplayer available for a game in which you and an npc partner fight bad guys for hours, but they didnt

They only had online multiplayer, requiring a second copy of the game, a second mathcing console and separate PSN ID (which now that PS Plus is mandatory for online on PS4 would only add to the price) and an internet connection to play with a human living in your own house

This is a blatant design flaw in a two player series like tekken or Halo, Uncharted I can kind of excuse for being primarily a single player story experience, but when its something I assume is easy to program, I cant see why they would avoid it, unless there was the incentive of making people buy a second console/disc

Remember when mario games on Game boy and DS allowed one copy of the game to be played on multiple game boys linked together?

Yeah definitely get GTA V it on PC, the mods make it much more enjoyable. Be warned though, Rockstar is a giant cunt when it comes to how they want you to play the game

If you dont want to play online/with other people, just pirate the game and get mods installed, I wouldnt usually support piracy, but the shit rockstar have pulled to make money has been damn infuriating (shitty dlc, microtransactions hurting the money system and making the game take fucking ages to play properly)

And of course, their banning of mods on normal versions of the game online is just a total cunt move. I suspect it's to try and push people away from modding, which is the big thing that PC gaming has over consoles. I really am going conspiracy theory mode here, but I wouldnt be surprised is Sony payed for GTA V and Arkham Knight to get sabotaged on PC to keep people happy with the console releases
