Soundgarden played on mtv's headbanger's ball first. Before Pearl Jam, Nirvana, even Alice in Chains. It was a music video they would play at 1 in the morning from the omega something ep. This was even before Loud Love came out. Was listening to thrash back then and didn't think much of them back then. Still don't honestly. They're to blame for the downfall of metal. I hate their douchey fans the most who get all auristic when they hear Staind, Creed or Nickelback
>>

i'm getting mixed messages from that post.

He objectively had one of the best voices in rock music. He kicked off an entire genre and inspired hundreds of new bands (not just shit like post-grunge, actual talented bands like Dillinger escape plan and other technical bands were hugely influenced by soundgarden). For those of us born early enough to experience the grunge era (I.E. not you 15 year olds memeing about his death) this man was undeniably one of the greatest rock legends to ever live.

It hurts because he was one of the most important icons of our generation.
>>
>>733012376
Soundgarden heavily influenced some of the best metal bands to come out of the late 90s/early 2000s. Unless this dude is talking about "metal" like twisted sister and poison. In which case, he can fuck off.

It's sad to think he was the last grunge era guy alive at least one of the mainstream ones. I really hope someone else will pick it up again and bring it back.
>>
I just hope the next ones to follow are the faggots from Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine.

Fuckin hate them
>>
>>733013323
How does relating to and loving someone's music equate to wanting to follow them in suicide? That said, I support anyone's right to off themselves, and I won't think any less of them for it.
>>
Does anyone else think he was back on alcohol and drugs? Judging from his later pictures he looks really skinny and unhealthy.
>>
>>733013698
Shouldn't wish death apon anyone that's kinda fucked dude.
>>
>>733013055
Not as iconic as Marilyn Manson though. Sure he could sing but he had such a basic heavy rock voice plus the bands he was in weren't on the same creative level with similar-voiced bands like The Who or Cheap Trick.
>>
>>733013648
Check out the band '68. Not quite grunge, but heavily influenced by grunge, particularly nirvana. Laws of music trends show that since 80s pop is popular again in the mainstream, grunge very well might be next, and it could be the revival that mainstream rock needs.
>>
>>733013698
Bite your tongue. Trent Reznor is just as much a rock god as Cornell. I hope he lives to be 100.

it's over man, main stream media and test groups are what put it on the map and are also what killed it.

enjoy what you can find but twenty one pilots are the future.

and that saddens me. yeah i'm old.
>>
>>733013880
Not on the same creative level? Let me break down grunge for you real quick.

Nirvana - punk rockers of grunge
Alice In Chains - metal band of grunge
Pearl Jam - jam band grunge
Soundgarden - prog band of grunge.

Soundgarden early in their career were initially called a Led Zeppelin ripoff. When it comes to 90s music, it doesn't get much more creative than soundgarden.

Don't know if you're memeing about Marilyn Manson, but I agree he was also rather influential, whether you like him or not. Just slightly later (wasn't truly groundbreaking until the late 90s)
>>
Who the fuck is Chris Cornell?
>>
>>733013937
Dude sings "Do you bite the hand that feeds you" and is signed to a Jew-owned label deal. Talk about a hypocrite. Same bullshit with Rage.

>>
>>733014120
Saying "I hope this person dies" is morally fucked. Yeah you could wish a blowjob from Taylor swift, but being that the person you are wishing death apon people you wouldn't get a blowy from any girl.
>>
>>733014342
Alice in chains Is legendary. Best grunge band of all time imo.
>>
>>733014151
>twenty one pilots
I had them suggested to me by one of those "if you like these three bands, you'll like this one" sites....boy were they wrong.
>>
>>733014564
They're all legendary in their own right. The entire era was a fucking atom bomb to the rock genre. While I may not personally enjoy all those bands (cough Pearl Jam) I can respect what they all did for the future of music. They literally saved us from more hair and trash metal
>>
>>733014151
You wish it were the twenty one pilots. Chainsmokers, motherfucker, Chainsmokers. And they aren't angsty and suicide-prone, no sir.

10 years ago people would have laughed you out of the room if you said two white dudes making pop rap would be the future of the mainstream. 10 years ago was gangster rap and nickelback/staind/shinedown/etc. a lot can change in even 5 years. It just takes a spark
>>

TWENTY 0NE PIL0TS are super talented and make great fucking music. One of the few bands you can listen to the entire album and love every song. Muse is another one, and they just release the first single from a new album coming soon. Chris Cornell hung himself, an-heroed, so sad, but life goes on and music keeps evolving.
>>
>>733014847
I'm not who you're arguing with, but I do find it a bit fucked to sincerely wish death on someone. I feel sorry for people that have that much hate in them. It only hurts themselves.
>>
>>733015044
Not comparing janes addiction and tool to grunge music (while both bands were huge in their own right) im talking specifically GRUNGE and what the genre did for the future of rock.

This. How many of your favorite bands released a record for free?

Chainsmokers cornered a wider appeal and got savvy marketing. I don't defend them, but have to acknowledge that they're here to stay and that they have the ability to muscle out other artists.

I agree with your formula, for the most part but I would add that Pearl Jam was the hard rock band of grunge in their first couple albums.... then they went to mopey pop with a grunge edge and still retain that sound. Pearl Jam was pretty great in their first album, their second was a slip, and after that they fell off worse than any other band I can think of.

For me, the grunge bands are ranked
1- Nirvana (really had his finger on the pulse of Gen X)
2- Alice in Chains (dem vocal harmonies)
3- Soundgarden (you say progressive, I'd prefer to say they were psychedelic grunge).
HUGE GAP
4- Pearl Jam - Ten is actually one my top 5 albums, but it's the only good one pearl jam ever made. After that they softened their tone considerably, they made 2 okay ish albums and everything else is unlistenably bad.

All three bands though (Nirvana, AIC, SG) are notable for great music in the 90s. And before you guitarfags till me how musically simple that shit is, I already know, I'm a musicianfag too. Grunge wasn't about skill it was about a feeling.

And don't throw Manson under the bus, I think he influenced our music far more strongly than he's given credit for from about 96 to the turn of the millenium.

I mean I dont hate them but fuck no Im not sad that was their choice of lifestyle

I feel for the innocent 7 yr old that gets raped beaten and killed before having a chance to even fight back.. or for shovel dogs.. or a guy who spends his entire life working 10 hour days and doing everything he can to be healthy and smart. Supports himself or a whole family and then drops dead early getting eaten away by cancer or the wife cheats on him and turns the kids against him etc.

I'm I the only one who's gonna ask the obvious question here:

Was it autoerotic asphyxiation?

He was found *on the ground* with a rubber band around his neck..... who actually kills themselves like that? The chance of failure would be high. So far none of the friends family have said anything about him being down or particularly suicidal.

I'm guessing he was a fan of shooting up and jerking while choking himself..... and like Hutchens or Carradine, that shit went south.

It's probably gonna be covered up for a bit like Hutchens/Carradine, but you can't keep a lid on a story like that forever.

That's what all the articles on his suicide say, broseph. No one kills themselves on the ground. No one uses some type of big rubber band on their neck.

You use a rope or belt, tie it on something high and step off a chair or a balcony or something.... the method doesn't really fit the supposed intent.

Sounds like the old doorknob suicide method...ever watch the Wire? It's what that kid does in prison...Avon's nephew, forget his name.
Pretty sure I've seen a video around here of some kid using that method.

>Do people not remember Buzz, Mudhoney, or Mother Love Bone? Or anyone else for that matter?

No, they do not. And I, for one, have never heard them and I've heard all Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and AiC; albums (well, at least the 90s shit, the post 2000 shit doesn't count) many times.

The more obscure Seatle Grunge like
>Buzz, Mudhoney, or Mother Love Bone
never got any radio or tv air time and most of us 90sfags have never heard them.

I have however heard Temple of the Dog and well, they deserved their relative obscurity. Despite being a lot of Pearl Jam guys and Chris Cornell their music wasn't great.

I'm just gonna assume those guys you've named also deserved their relative obscurity, if you were a Seattle band in the early 90s and you didn't get a major record deal, you must have really sucked. The record producers realized the Seattle Grunge was a very marketable thing and they were eager to sign any guys that could do that sound well.

>Probably don't know Earth either

Let's be real, does anyone know who Earth is?

The only Earth I know of was the predecessor to Black Sabbath when they were still a blues band looking for a sound.

If you're talking about a grunge band named Earth, I have not heard of them. And no one else has either.

And, I'll even be willing to grant you the benefit of the doubt and believe that they *may* be good, but it would be insane to have expected any of us to have heard them.

Just like Buzz, Mother Love Bone, or Mudhoney.

Maybe they're good, I don't know. There's all kinds of good unsigned artists.

... but the thing is record producers were trying their damnedest to make every big Seattle band into superstars at the time and they had a pretty good ear for bands with a marketable sound. The Seattle guys that still couldn't hit it big in this era make me wonder why.

But I have an open mind. Post the best track from each and I'll give em a listen.

I'm not the replied-to anon, but you really ought to at least know Mother Love Bone if you claim to know some of the other bands you named...they're all related. I'd give you a pass on the others, but not that one.
>>
>>733021516
Earth, the melvins and related bands pioneered grunge and a plethora of other genres. If you don't know these bands you clearly don't know into the 80s/90s Washington scene at all
