Because you will never stop women from getting them. It was outlawed in most of the world for centuries and yet women got them all the time. Now, if it were illegal, they would still find ways to get them, often unsavory, dangerous ways. And when injured they become a problem for the state, problems for workers in their families, or just take up resources as simple as a doctor's time to fix the mistake. Women will get abortions if they want them, no matter what, law just makes them criminals. It's just like guns. You can go ban them in the US, but it's not going to stop people from using them to kill people, just makes criminals out of people that weren't criminals before.

I take the pragmatic approach. I don't like abortion, I'm a scientist so I am fully aware it is alive and human, and consciousness is not enough to warrant killing it (we don't kill people who are brain dead, at worst, we pull the plug, but we don't give them a lethal injection to hasten the process) but that said, women will get them, you cannot stop it, so we can either have unsafe, illegal abortions, or safe, legal ones, and the safe legal ones are less of burden on society than the alternative.

There is a difference between believing that abortion should be legal and being "pro-abortion". I think abortion is disgusting and tragic, but from a practical standpoint, it makes sense to allow women who can't properly care for the child to end the pregnancy. When an emotionally unfit and financially destitute mothers give birth, the burden of raising those children falls on society in the form of welfare and the resultant increase in the crime rate. There is a correlation between access to abortion services and a lower crime rate.
