Evansville police said a pit bull bit off a portion of a 9-year-old boy's face Sunday night.

Officers were called to 727 East Columbia Street at 5:15 p.m. where the child's mother was holding a rag over his face, according to EPD Sergeant Jacob Taylor.

Taylor said "basically the whole right cheek was bitten off."

The child was taken to Deaconess Hospital where Taylor said he will require facial reconstruction surgery. Evansville Animal Control took possession of the dog.

The dog was let out of the home by its owner and then ran in a back alley way to where the child was standing outside his home, according to Taylor

A witness said they saw the dog dragging the boy down the alleyway and it bit the child in the face after releasing it, according to Taylor.

Taylor said the child's eye was swollen and black. Officers were unsure of the extent of eye damage. Animal control cited the dog owner. Taylor said criminal charges will also be filed against them at a later date.

The dog owner said the animal was let out by a family member and refused commands to come back, according to Taylor

The owner said the dog was running at the child to play and was bit because he screamed, according to Taylor.

I don't own any dogs myself because my family's home owners insurance excludes most of the breeds that we like (American Bulldogs, apbt's, am staffs, Dobermans, Rottweilers, etc.) and our work schedules only allows us enough free time to take care of low maintenance pets like cats. There's still alot that has to go into a national ban of something. Drugs for example can have an temp emergency ban (still requires evidence that its causing problems.) but after that a TON of information is needed to make said substance illegal... Worked with Animal Control in Dallas while getting my undergrad a few years ago. Can provide insight on what i learned firsthand:

Op is kind of right, to a degree. Pits/Staffies are definitely the niggers of the dog world. They are almost physically unmatched in sheer speed and power, and the intelligence is just not all there. Not ONCE did i ever meet a SMART(obey very specific commands, well fed diet etc) pit, more than often they are too dumb/scared for their own good. Most of the time if they were on the street or in the pound it was due to said reason: They would be scared/dumb and make one lash out to some idiot and due to their natural power in their bite Animal Control had to come deal with the shit.

These dogs fucking PLAGUE the shelters. You guys have any idea how much of a PAIN IN THE ASS it is to try and socialize these dogs compared to others that are in shelters? AT LEAST half of the time they would immediate bite/attack any other dog they would be introduced to. Any other breed(except maybe like Rat Terriers, those things are gay too) would present little to no problems in this area.
