Path 1.) Bachelor's. Work at Dairy Queen, pay off student loans the rest of your life, be poor, worthless.
Path 2.) PhD - over 70% of candidates do not complete this after starting. See Path 1. But let's assume you're part of the 30% that actually finishes your PhD.
Congratz! You've a PhD! Now you will look for a job as a professor (to perpetuate the circle jerk). I assume you want a real, tenure track position? 95% of PhD graduates do not achieve this. If you are REALLY lucky you will get an adjunct job. This means they pay you 15k a year to be a professor, but without the title.

Universities are "for profit" machines now. They lost government funding, which means they brought in BUSINESSMEN to run them, which means now they are about dollars. Gone are the days where the president of the university lives on campus. Now, he lives in a home 6 times the size on the lake (literally, I've seen this before). As such, the "hallowed institutions of learning" are no more.

So you have a 30% chance of finishing said PhD. A 5% chance of getting a tenure track job if you succeed. Then a roughly 1 in 4 chance of even getting tenure, assuming you write a book and suck D for 5 years.

I would "implore you to consider something else" but you are a philosophy major. This ironically means you aren't going to listen to reason.
