I grew up knowing I was a member of the last generation of humankind. Early on in the 80s, nearly every aspect of every day life in the US was centered on the push to develop a colony on mars. My first years of school centered on how life would be in a sealed habitat.
The US, the USSR, China and Canada were the only areas with any stability. Nuclear strikes had been made by the russians on the Koreas, Japan, and afghanistan. India and Pakistan had mostly obliterated each other.
Most of the middle east was in chaos, Israel didn't exist. Africa was divided into provinces controlled by the US and USSR. Mexico was nominally controlled by the US but seemed de facto autonomous. South America had taken nuclear strikes from the US in 1994 after a military regime based in brazil began consolidating the continent and tried to threaten their way into the ark projects.
Daily life was ever more strictly regimented. Marshall law had been in place since the 70s. Trials were by panels of judges. There were no appeals. Any violent crime got the death penalty. Everything else, including "laziness" was punished with forced labor for various lengths of time.
As time went on and it became obvious that shifting a viable population to mars would not work, society didn't exactly collapse, it just sort of relaxed. People kept doing their jobs for the most part. A man in my block killed another man for fucking his daughter. Cops didn't care. They had real problems like paramilitary raids to deal with.
In november 2005, the first pieces of the comet started falling. Like a spray of galactic buckshot. The earthquakes were more or less constant, though not often strong.
