you can't travel at c (conventionally through spacetime), but the really interesting thing is that you can asymptotically approach it, and as you do, time dilation increases... it passes slower for you than the rest of the universe. this has been experimentally confirmed by flying atomic clocks around and comparing their time to ones that stay on the ground.
so, time travel is entirely possible. only forward, but you could theoretically dilate time so much, 1 minute for you would be millions of years for earth.

It's because that for now at least the only good technology we have to go fast is using rockets. The faster you want to go, the bigger the rocket. Bigger rockets requires a lot of fuel, fuel is heavy so you need more fuel to propel the fuel you had to bring to go faster. You will need a rocket of the size of (insert something huge I don't want to calculate) just to bring a small metal ball at say half the speed of light. So even without relativistic effects it would be a crazy endeavor.

That's not how a rocket works, you have a determined deltaV, so you can choose to accelerate at 1g for 1 minute, or 0.1g for 10min for example. These questions are actually related! The short version is "Because of physics, you can't go faster than light, ever". But there's a lot to go into it, so no long version today. Here's the super simplified but still not really short version.

Basically, velocity (because speed is relative and meaningless when talking about absolute movement through space) is energy divided by mass. We know that light has energy. We also know that light... has no mass.

What this means is that light will /always/ be going the absolute maximum speed it's possible for something to go. Even if you had a magic box that increased the speed limit, light would speed up to match it. Ergo, one can never outpace light, period.

There are ways to finangle the law, but it involves some very complex math and I'm not /sci/ enough to feel comfortable explaining how to build an alcubierre drive.
