I dont understan how is so difficult to reach speed of light in space ... Arg: In space there is no friction, no gravity, no air, nothing to stop you. So, if you accelerate to a constant rate, speed will only go up till you reach speed of light. So, whats the problem?

op, the problem is the fuel would contribute to the already doomed planet we have if we don't stop emissions properly. That the the fuel it takes to go the speed of sound is considered already costly. Space is grand but unless we have a magentic mini black hole fantasy machine that won't destroy us all. We are sorta stuck here with our own sun for the rest of Human Existence. It's predicted we will never reach the closest sun to us.

>>
>>732501465
The closer you get to the speed of light, the more your momentum approaches infinity. Thus, to actually get to the speed of light, you'd need infinite force and thus infinite fuel.
>>
Because of time dilation. As you approach the speed of light the way you experience time will slow such that you will never reach light speed.
>>
>>732501465
A feature that emerges from special relativity is that, as something speeds up, its mass increases compared with its mass at rest, with the mass of the moving object determined by multiplying its rest mass by the Lorentz factor. This increase in relativistic mass makes every extra unit of energy you put into speeding up the object less effective at making it actually move faster.

As the speed of the object increases and starts to reach appreciable fractions of the speed of light (c), the portion of energy going into making the object more massive gets bigger and bigger.

Most scientists agree we can get close buthumans can barely withstand 10gs let alone whatever force light speed would put on a human body.

It would also take years for a vehicle to reach light speed with our tech. Like how cars are 0-60 in x seconds.. in this case the rocket wouldn't achieve light speed for a significant amount of time. Years I think I read somewhere. 0-light speed in x years isn't an exciting pitch.
>>
>>732502545
but why?
>>
there's tons of dust out in space so lots of opportunity for friction

so long as you have mass you can't approach the speed of light without expending incomprehensible levels of energy, it's how the equation balances

speed of light will never be approached basically, so the next best thing is making use of side effects to to cover distance without violating basic laws

You'll only go as fast as whatever drive can propel you. It requires more energy than is feasible to for a human to reach light speed.

The structure of space-time does not allow matter to reach the speed of light. The best you can do is approach it asymptotically.

tl;dr
Space-time is Jewish
>>
>>732502694

Speed doesn't apply a force. Acceleration does.

And there's no such thing as light acceleration.
>>
>>732502694
but maybe we could send our probes and shit out, towards more advanced planets who would see that we exist over here and come invade..er..save us
>>
you can't travel at c (conventionally through spacetime), but the really interesting thing is that you can asymptotically approach it, and as you do, time dilation increases... it passes slower for you than the rest of the universe. this has been experimentally confirmed by flying atomic clocks around and comparing their time to ones that stay on the ground.
so, time travel is entirely possible. only forward, but you could theoretically dilate time so much, 1 minute for you would be millions of years for earth.

It's because that for now at least the only good technology we have to go fast is using rockets. The faster you want to go, the bigger the rocket. Bigger rockets requires a lot of fuel, fuel is heavy so you need more fuel to propel the fuel you had to bring to go faster. You will need a rocket of the size of (insert something huge I don't want to calculate) just to bring a small metal ball at say half the speed of light. So even without relativistic effects it would be a crazy endeavor.

Light energy does however, exert force on an object, which can cause acceleration.

>>732503245

Some of the more "serious" proposals for an interstellar probe involve pushing with lasers. But yeah, no amount of acceleration will get you to c. You either got it (if massless) or you don't (if massy). And potatoes like us are certainly massy.

Sending humans to Rigil Kent, would take more energy than we have at our disposal, here on Earth.

Sending a very small, very tiny spacecraft (or more reasonably, a whole slew of them) is possibly within our capability. Still, more than a few decades out from what we can do today, and most credible designs involve travel time of 100+ years.

I'd say its safe to say our only way out safely out of our universe is aliens visiting or us projecting our brains memories into the tiny size of a particle or atom and shooting it at light speed. Proceeding to transmute time and space. CERN is already shooting particles at light speed. People don't realize how small our memory banks actually are I THINK.

>>732503842
That's not how a rocket works, you have a determined deltaV, so you can choose to accelerate at 1g for 1 minute, or 0.1g for 10min for example. It doesn't matter, if you accelerate slowly you will not end up faster. The only relevant variables are your initial and final mass (or the % of fuel mass to total ship mass) and the specific impulse of your motor: how fast is the burned gas expelled from the rocket.

>Why can't you go faster than light in Space if Space has no friction?
>What if Light is just the fastest thing, and there's a speed limit faster than that and just nothing goes that fast?

These questions are actually related! The short version is "Because of physics, you can't go faster than light, ever". But there's a lot to go into it, so no long version today. Here's the super simplified but still not really short version.

Basically, velocity (because speed is relative and meaningless when talking about absolute movement through space) is energy divided by mass. We know that light has energy. We also know that light... has no mass.

What this means is that light will /always/ be going the absolute maximum speed it's possible for something to go. Even if you had a magic box that increased the speed limit, light would speed up to match it. Ergo, one can never outpace light, period.

There are ways to finangle the law, but it involves some very complex math and I'm not /sci/ enough to feel comfortable explaining how to build an alcubierre drive.

Alcubierre drive...improbable but not yet proven impossible.

Science doesn't "prove" things. It can only build evidence supporting a theory. >So, if you accelerate to a constant rate, speed will only go up till you reach speed of light.
The problem is E = mc^2. If you accelerated yourself to the speed of light, you'd cease to exist, because that's all the energy you consist of being burned off right there. If something else were accelerating you, it would be doing work on you; all energy has mass, and the speed of light is so great that the minuscule amount of mass the work done on you would add to you would be a great enough increase in inertia to prevent you from reaching that speed under the same force.
>>
>>732501465
(cont from >>732509941 ) Furthermore, space and time are quantized by the speed of light. If you accelerated to the speed of light, the information that you'd done so would be propagating through space at the same speed as you. You would therefore outrun your own physical properties and enter an informational void.
