University degrees in the I.T industry barely mean shit anyone. They still hold some value but what the Industry wants are vendor certifications whether you want to get into being a Sys admin and getting MCSA "Microsoft Associate" or Networking going and getting your CCNP.

For my industry I make around 138k a year after tax. I entered the industry with CCNP and OSCP qualifications no degree but am now working towards a degree in computer science so I can move up into exploit development where I will probably get a decent pay bump of about 20-30k

Im not OP but i lucked into the industry years ago. I started with a compsci degree, but like others have said its not necessary if you get the right certs.

pentesting is kinda the intersection of computer networking and software testing. so you want to have strong knoweldge of how the various network protocols work (like arp, 802.11, tcp, udp, ftp, http/s, various encryption and authorisation protocols, and the other stuff im forgetting)
as well as this you want to get a handle on the software side of things (be confident in a few languages, both interpreted scripting languages to automate command line tasks and at least one compiled, you dont need to know how to write good assembly, but you should know at least the basics)
now you get exposure to what it is you want to be testing, pen testers can be called to test network hardware and configurations, authentication systems on servers with varied operating systems, web servers, hardware builds for corporate laptops, anything and everything

pentests are the most fun, but the most stress - you plug into a network and need to find something that you can escalate your privilidge with - sometimes it will be a simple arp spoof that captures network traffic containing unencrypted logins, sometimes it will be open shares or ftp servers that contain sensitive information, pass the hash attacks and rainbow tables were the most usefull things back when i was working(it may have changed now), but sometimes testers could just brute force passwords if the password policy was weak or not enforced

you wont get far if you are not an excelent communicator- both writen and verbal.
you need to talk to admins in detail so they can fix the problems you find.
you also need to speak and write at high level to corporates to explain ROI and charm them for more money/tests
