There are generations worth of research on the treatment of depression, some methods date back to before Jesus was born

Depression can be measured through dopamine and serotonin levels, there's actually a saliva test for depression (not the most accurate, but it's something)

Last of all, i dont take any pills because all the ones I've tried sucked. The only reason i tell people its worth trying is because I've seen others have success.

My story of antidepressants starts with a massive concussion received from falling off a three foot wall onto a rock when I was a lad. By the time I turned 20 I'd wanted to kill myself for almost half the time I'd been alive. I still do.

But thanks to seeing a psychologist and doctor they've helped me to find what helps me.

There are goods and bads to it. I'm quick on the trigger in the bedroom sometimes and can be prone to fits of anger however thanks to the work of my doctors I don't want to kill myself 24/7 365

My point is sometimes you need antidepressants.

I've been on antidepressants since I was 13. (11 years). If you don't want someone to take them then you don't understand, it's just trying to balance out brain chemicals.

I've gone up on doses and been on 3 different ones, my side effects are fatigue, increased sweating and loss of sex drive. I didn't lose my sex drive until triple dose if that worries you.

I know I've been having a rough fucking time the past two years, but I'll be damned if I hit rock bottom by being prescribed meds and talking to shrinks. You know you're all now labeled as "has to take meds for mental illness" right? Just stop playing video games and go outside.

I was on Sertraline before but now on Venlafaxin, doc told me it was basically sertraline but with some adrenaline in it aswell. The extra energy REALLY helps.
Also, meds dont make the depression go away. it makes it more managable.
Like for me, my self harming is at a minimum, dont burst out in tears EVERY day, and the little boost in energy helps you get over your own hurdles.

Antidepressants did me a lot of good and I had no side effects.

If she needs them, she should take them.

She should see a psychologist or a psych-therapist. Those two can determine what's wrong with your gf and if it can be treated with or without meds. If she needs meds, she has to see a psychiatrist, which then will try to find the right medication for her. If she doesn't need meds, she will need to see her therapist some time (which she will also under medication)

I personally found cannabis to be the most effective chemical treatment for my MDD (compared to SSRIs and SNRIs) and in conjunction with regular therapy I am more or less able to live a normal life.

Yeah, docs in hospitals are usually overworked and understaffed and are quick to give out meds.
Find a private practice. And read reviews. And be sceptical. It's hard to find the right doc. I'm looking for a new one at the moment because my old one retired. Been to 3 so far and they all wanted to add abilify to my Seroquel medication, no matter how often I told them that I tried that and it made everything worse.
I'm schizophrenic but have a developped sceptical mindset, which helps a lot to keep me on the sane side.
It's super important for mental patients to educate themselves.

I took abilify as a mood stabilizer along with Wellbutrin. I'm glad to be off of it. Part of my issue ended up being anemia, which is pretty uncommon for dudes. I'm off both at the moment, thankfully. Wellbutrin seems to work okay, but I think I feel a bit better overall being off of it when I'm not in the depths of depression.

I TOOK ANTI DEPRESSANTS, and it triggered my Biopolar to come out. Anti-depressants are for the weak willed and an excuse in my opinion.
