There are a couple easy ways to find people on SL.

1. Search - Events: Majority of these are actually clubs & strip clubs. But there are different events like Open Mic, Poetry, Church, Carnivals, & lots of Discussion & Roleplay groups.

2. Search - Interests: Type in something you like and go to the sims dedicated to it. Or join the groups. /vg/ has a group and sim dedicated to them. Nice folks there.

2. Search - Sandbox: Go to the sand boxes with higher populations and talk to people.

3. Use the Map. On the map it shows players are green dots, just move around and click where you see green dots. Depending what you wanna do. If you want to meet a lot of people then click on places where there are a larger number of dots. If you wanna troll couples, often in their houses/private property, then click on the two dots near each other. Single dots are often AFKers.

But it depends what you wanna do. If you actually wanna socialize with these people then hit the Clubs and use the search option to join Groups that share similar interests. Just talk to people, add them as friends, and go do things with them. Eventually you'll find your own niche.

Unless you're a troll/griefer. Then you're on your own finding victims and looking for the other mischief makers such as yourself.

To setup, No. But to find good victims can take awhile. You can spend an hour randomly going to peoples private property and interrupting their sex and only get one or two people who rage. Others will just eject/ban you from the area if they have rights or get up and leave without saying anything to you. But every now and then you get that delightful couple ...

Do you have to pay money? No. You can earn lindens through games, events, etc.
Or you can get a job like being a DJ, an Employee at a sim like a bouncer/bartender, a Stripper, Escort, etc.
But you need lindens for your own sim-land, to upload your own 3D creations, textures, etc.
So for most people it's easier to spend a few bucks.
Then you can sell your creations in game for Lindens and turn a profit.

Not sure. Mesh avatars I've been told can run you $5-$15 depending the creator. But I tend to go with the free shit until I make some linden then buy stuff. But anything you spend linden or irl money on you want on separate accounts than your mischief accounts. That way if you get banned you don't lose shit. I learned that the hard way. Someone bought this avatar for me because I made them laugh all night long, then the account got banned a few months later and I lost the avatar. I ain't gonna spend the money on a new one but I did like this avatar because its cool and it was a gift.

It is difficult to get into the controls at first. Just remember right click and "sit" is normally to use items. You'll get a pop up asking if its okay to animate your character, clicking Okay makes you do the animations. Mess with your camera settings if you need to like if you want it to snap back behind your character once you move, etc. Left click and hold then moving your mouse should move the camera angle, middle mouse button is zoom in and out.

I'm using phoenix firestorm viewer (SL viewer is a bit slow n clunky) because it runs faster but it shouldn't be much different.

Premium neighborhoods! SL tried to lure people back in by creating a zone of neighborhoods for cheap cheap with pre-built houses that all you had to decorate. This was them trying to capitalize off people who like to play games like The Sims but are tired of the limitations. You pay like $10 a month and get a house all your own to do wtfever you want in. You don't have to pay to visit those areas tho, just have to pay to have a house.
