Just compare the first quest in NV with the first quest in Fallout 4.
NV: A town is threatened by escaped convicts. You can join the townsfolk in their defense, join the convicts (which opens up a whole new questchain), or just leave them alltogether. Your decision has a noticeable impact on your ingame reputation.

Fallout 4: Some guys are trapped on a building, go kill the evil guys (tm) to save them. Oh, and do it in the exact way the game tells you to do it, no own initative plz. After you saved them, you'll get another boring ass quest you can't even decline. Spoiler: It mainly consists of killing more evil guys (tm).

Ohh it's a shame you didn't get to play Mech 2, that game had the biggest impact on me of any game I've ever played. The level of immersion it delivered in a mid 90's game was pretty intense and things like a reactive soundtrack were super uncommon at the time. Also being able to work up to leading a Mercenary company in Mercs was fucking epic.

Nah I thoroughly enjoyed 2 and it could have been better if it wasn't rushed. The ending was so disappointing.

bethesda knows how to build a beautiful world, they're probably the best. but the elderscolls used to be classic style rpg's and now they're little more than a template for modders. the story and gameplay are utter shit. the NPC actually conform to whatever lvl you are so the whole thing is meaningless. I can't even begin to explain questing.... ok here i go.

In morrowind someone would tell you to walk south, find a river, take it to a fork, head north, dodge teh haunted tomb/ruins/dwarven bullshit and then put your nose to the ground for the cave of GlugGlug or whatever the shit. That's the kinda stuff i'm after, that's immersion, that's what gets me sucked the fuck into an imaginary world, k?
Skyrim doesn't play that shit. skyrim replace a short elegant written story with shoddy voice acting of some problem you couldn't possibly care about and a literal arrow on your screen the entire time, guiding you to the end where another live or two of thanks still won't make you give a single solitary shit about whatever you just did. lvl up. pick a perk. plebeian.

This is why I never cared about the landscape of skyrim.

When I started playing oblivion I didn't even realize you could fast travel. It wasn't until fallout 3 came out and displayed that message on the screen "you've discovered several locations" etc etc. that I even realized you could fast travel with your map.

Having to actually find your way to a quest objective is how you admire the game world. Why even make a beautiful game world if players aren't going to explore it?

Fallout 2 is godtier, and Fallout 1 is close. None of the others are. They aren't bad games mind you. I quite enjoyed 3 and NV, and even Tactics.

In fact Tactics has imo the best chapter of the BoS. They were hardcore bad-asses like the BoS is supposed to be, and yet they were even more open to outsiders and concerned about salvaging and rebuilding civilization than Lyon's BoS--their motto was something along the lines of ’we're here to save you whether you want to be saved or not,' which makes them the closest thing to the authentic US military that we've yet seen in the Fallout universe. They were also open to ghouls, supermutants, and even the intelligent deathclaws, which is also a realistic and genuine depiction of American ideals and values: we are a nation built upon an idea and a willingness to fight to the bitter finish, against all odds for it, and not a specific ethnicity, or race, or religious group, or in this case species. We Americans are willing to share it with our lessers, and build them up to our own level, or at least we were until the country got hijacked by modern liberal elitists faggots, and fascists. The Chicago Brotherhood were a BoS every true, patriotic American could be proud to side with and do missions and shit for in a video game. Too had they were essentially decimated and all but wiped out as far as Fallout canon goes. But that's another thread.

You just need to be diligent about it, usually conflicting mods can be weeded out by common sense and reading the notes. It was a pain in the ass though, I even had to patch a few things myself but it was worth the effort.
