well i have done the same with drinking a lot (until I black out) and suddenly a few years ago I was hit with crippling anxiety. I stopped the drink and it helped only slightly. I wondered if I'd done some longer term damage.

I ended up not touching alcohol for about 11 months - got fitter and generally more physically well but I couldn't take the anxiety anymore and ended up going for a low dose SSRI drug (a form of antidepressant).

15 years ago, my guinea pig passed away
he lived for 9 years, and filled some kind of void in me
i felt needed, i had someone that actually relied on me; someone that cared about what i did, someone that reacted to me and my motions.
the loss made it clear to me how little people rely on each other, and how absolute actually is.

when he died, i witnessed my dad crying for the first time in my life. he was laying by the tiny cage with red eyes, sobbing his heart out by this minimal black limp of a guinea pig. i loved my dad intensely in that moment, the emotional spectre was so broad it was unbelievable; dad's crying, the only living thing i truly cared about is dead, and i'm sharing that loss with a person i love.
dad is getting old now, and he's the reason i keep trying to move forward in life generally. girls never get close to me, no matter how many sexual and romantic occassions i've been in, and my close friends don't really know me to be honest. I think they just find me humorous and socially cool.
dad knows me though, and when he passes away, i'll lay by him and sob my heart out, but that time i won't share the loss with anyone.

Both of these statements fall into what I labeled above as false assertions commonly proscribed by progressives. YOU don't feel you need religion, and your personal exposure to it has led you to believe that it's "backwards" and holding people back, but I would argue otherwise. I would argue that some of the beliefs held by modern progressives are backwards, and holding society back, while my experience with religion has given me purpose, hope, and inspiration to work towards the future.

I was a double major Econ and Philosophy in undergrad and pursued a PhD in Philosophy.

Philosophy has done more for my life than anything else, but on the other side of the coin, I can't help but notice that people around me just don't operate on the same level.

I know this sounds like pic related, but if you take my word for it, just for a thought experiment, then hear me out:

Spending more than a decade reading the most rigorous works in the historical philosophical canon, writing over five hundred thousand words of papers that were never going to be published, studying formal logic like I was in an algebra class... I've become quite qualified at breaking down arguments. I've learned a lot about the world, I've escaped from the trap of scientism that some of my peers succumbed to. But when I listen to non-academics, like people from here, it is so clear to me where the flaw lies, where the ignorance is bridged by intuition, where the assertion is glued with moralism. It's clear that people without anything more than two eyes and a mouth go off on a tangent based on personal experience rather than reality. It's painfully obvious when people pretend to know what they're talking about but in reality, have no clue.

And yet, these people are so pompous and arrogant. Their confidence is unwarranted. There's a difference between a dickbag and a dickbag who can back it up. But why are we like this? Why do we cling to our fragile worldviews so vehemently? Why aren't people willing to take new information at stride to reformulate their understanding of the world around them?

It's this dogmatism that I mostly see from conservatives, and it's the exact opposite of intellectual integrity - and yet, they claim to have it on their side! Avoiding people is preferable at this point. Tfw.

I wouldn't claim to have the same level of experience in academia, but I've been around academics all my life, spent most of my formative years reading copious amounts of literature related to politics/history/philosophy, and I've certainly come to similar conclusions. Though I would say that despite differences between the two sides, there are plenty of people stuck to their misinformed dogmatic views on both sides.

What I've noticed is that if you compare the two major ideological sides in America, generally what you see is liberals on average have a higher level of education, though you know as well as I that most educated people are still pretty dumb. They tend to assume a basic understanding of some topics makes them an expert, and so they act like they know everything.

What I see from conservatives is that though many have low levels of academic achievement, a lot of their beliefs are pretty spot on from my perspective, but they are usually held based on intuition and feelings rather than genuine research. It makes arguing with them frustrating as all hell.
