just saw this last night. I'd say they are about even. Cloverfield deff benefits from being watched in theaters as well as living in nyc. Lane is good but too straightforward. Not gonna lie, when i watched cloverfield for the first time shortly after it's release on dvd, i was so captivated by it.

Yes, the film was imperfect because of the camera quality, shit angles, and so on, but that was the magic of the movie. It never changed from the initial camera from beginning to end (from what i can remember, it's been a while)

Anyways, another good movie that is similar as far as the way it was filmed and the amount of captivation, mystery, and action, are from a Spanish film called REC.

REC is probably one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Even the second one, which leads off right where the first one ends, is a great movie which gives it some serious plot twist instead of the cliffhanger the first movie leaves you with. The third movie, however, is complete trash.

If you decide to watch REC, know the american version is Quarantine. In my personal opinion, quarantine wasn't as good. If you can find a good quality version of the movie with subtitles if you can't speak Spanish, i highly recommend it.
