As it is Islam will never be a religion of peace for one simple fact: Sectarian Strife. Islam is diverse in it's interpretation of the Koran: Shia Suni Sufi etc. The only problem each one passionately thinks the other is wrong and will kill a mother fucker to prove it. This is because culturally the Islamic world is still for the most part tribal.
Christians are also not very peaceful and used to have this problem as well. Many wars fought over Protestant v Catholic and only the Irish (another very tribal people) and perhaps a few others in African places kept it up into the 20th. Most Christians grew up and stopped killing one another over the minutia of dogma, we now just kill each other over other shit like money.
Islam may one day be (in the distant future) a religion of peace, but first their must be peace within Islam. Muslims can't even at this point agree to disagree about their interpretation. When and if they do stop murdering one another in great big bleeding heaps then I think they will at last be at the starting line to becoming a religion of peace.
