Prior to all the formalization of degrees and qualifications, science was being pushed forward by people without formal degrees.

Science is something anyone can practice, university makes the process more directional.

Independent scientists are no longer a term now, but people like James Lovelock describe science around WW2 and beyond.

People who were employed within industry, often started as barely qualified technicians and became experts because they experimented at work. There are plenty of people who eventually became experts without qualifications, often pursuing them later or gaining an honorary degree later in life.

I have a MSc in environmental science, and had to teach myself fresh water chemistry, so I could Intergrate it into models examining waste water and invertebrate toxicology.

Am i qualified formally in chemistry, hell no. But my peers in chemistry consider me to be capable, and my models are dank, peer reviewed works of art.

Also, if you publish your findings and no one cites them. Are you a real scientist?

There are also 'industry' experts who are qualified, and get published in noteable journals. That one one cites because they're too specialized or the paper is so convoluted that no one wants to even challenge the findings because they're just a mess. Often used to promote best practices, which go unquestioned.

Science isn't black and white within the science when you advance your field, but Bill Nye is at least getting science to people that wouldn't otherwise be exposed to it.
