I use linux for the following reasons:

1. It's free

2. There are no restrictions like the ones you see on Mac / Windows

3. Nobody is spying on you

4. Programming is easier - no need to configure path and stuff

5. You can get a distro for literally any specific thing you're trying to do (from privacy to doing graduate work in astronomy).

6. It works on almost any hardware. I have 10+ year old laptops with mechanical hard drives that still work great running linux lite.

If by "just fucking works" you mean can't install the most recent version of MySQL and frequently has hardware incompatibilities. Also, you can configure dependencies manually.

I'm serious about this. Everytime I'm at work or back when I was in school, we always have / had to wait on someone with a macbook because their shit wasn't compatible or didn't work.

Just own up to the fact that you're paying inflated prices for an OS that is marginally better than Windows sometimes.

No, I don't browse linux forums because I rarely need support for everything because Linux doesn't fucking break all the time.

This might be a surprise to a lot of the people here, but it used to be understood that Linux was the OS you were going to use if you were ever going to do any serious computing or programming. Mac showed up and started to become popular in maybe the mid / late 2000s, and everyone jumped on board.

They're overpriced.
They're selling your data to the government / corporations.
They have major compatibility issues.
They're bloated.
They restrict your ability to do things. If you're a dev, they'll often restrict the ability to do your job.

Mac is a trend. Hopefully it dies soon.

Well holy shit. I'm doing an upgrade right now of Kubuntu 16.10 to 17.04. I recommend doing that kind of upgrade clean from live boot cuz doing it as dist-upgrade might break. It's happened to me lots of times. Its risky to do upgrades that far in the past without a clean install.

>>731026743

I've been using Linux at work since 2010. No question that Windows is still needed to get some things done, so thats why my computer always has a desktop dedicated to a Windows 7 VM, so I can switch between Linux and Windows with a flick of the mouse. Linux offers some seriously powerful productivity tools for networking, programming, modeling, and management, not to mention how easy it is to make a quick new tool that might not already exist by scrapping together some pre-made command tools and libraries. In Windows the third party support and tools are almost exclusively dominated by Microsoft making it much more difficult to solve problems without hoping someone has already built a program to do exactly what you need or just settling with a lesser approach.

And yes, while it's annoying that Linux needs more work to get it to do some things that Windows or Mac does out-of-the-box, neither of them give you the kind of powerful control of your own computer as Linux. When you use windows, you OWN your computer which for people who have lived inside Windows all their lives won't understand what that means.

Linux is a minority, for a just purpose.

https://www.ece.cmu.edu/~ganger/712.fall02/papers/p761-thompson.pdf
tl;dr:
Nefarious people can embed code in common compilers like GCC that will do things like include a backdoor in the "login" binary. The code also reinserts itself in GCC when GCC is compiled from source. Once it's in the binaries of GCC that are used to build GCC, the original C source code for the backdoor can be removed, and nobody will be the wiser.

I rage quit so often when using Microsoft software. It is made for the dumb people. Always gets into my way.
I use Debian Linux at work and gentoo Linux at home. Works really well. I could not work so efficiently without Linux.
>>
>>731026743
Honestly, windows works fine for most people.

I occasionally try Linux because I love the fact that they didn't add artificial limitations to it. Example, I wanted to make an NTFS drive FAT 32 for use on my PS 3. Trying to do it on Windoze was a pain, and I'd be forced to use some shady third party program. On an Ubuntu Live disk I just did it in 5 minutes.

On the other hand, if there are issues on Linux, don't expect it to get fixed any time soon. There are threads going back several years where people are begging for workarounds in order to shut off the Bluetooth which for some reason autostarts. There's no fucking way to do it easily, and the help sections are mostly cocksucking nerds saying "whyd u wanna do that?" It's just not user friendly once you stumble upon a problem.

>>731032508

>>
>>731031795

Spying can still happen on any computer or network. The thing is that with Linux it doesn't come bundled in the OS and expected.
>>
>>731032312
Every device you own is spying on you. The laws will never be changed because the three letter agencies get huge erections over all that personal data. In fact, it's far more likely that in the future it will be illegal to try to block Windows spyware at the router.
>>
>>731032657
In other words, you get a false sense of security. Everyone knows Windows spies on you, and probably OSX as well. If you use Linux, you're already on a list for using subversive technology, and the NSA is working their asses off to get a backdoor into Linux, assuming they haven't succeeded already.
>>
>>731032672
This doesn't seem unlikely. They have at times tried to ban email encryption. And with the rate they are trying to import muzzies, they might just achieve full surveillance sometime in the near future.
>>
A reason to use linux would be that you can tweak you install to best suit your system.

So - for performance.

I just spy on them back, they have more secrets than I do.
>>
>>731032808
No, you have more control to prevent yourself from being spied on. Obviously the government is not only working to backdoor linux, but to spy on the network infrastructure you use to access the internet. The point is that if you start with Windows or Mac, you're starting off with even hardware that's already compromised and you're paying too much for it. With Linux you have a fighting chance if you know what you're doing.

I mean, seriously, even insinuating that Mac or Windows has the privacy standards that Linux does is quite laughable.

>Donuts, nuclear bombs and niggers had nothing to do with it?
>>
>>731033541

I don't think that's true at all, nor do I think it's a good comparison.

When an ISP sees that your traffic is encrypted, they don't know that it's encrypted via tor. They just can't see it what you're doing. TOR hasn't been compromised so much as it has become mainstream so people try to use it without knowing anything about networking and then get into trouble.
>>
>>731033928
The directory of Tor nodes is public knowledge. If you're sending encrypted traffic to one of those addresses, it's pretty obvious you're using Tor.
>>
>>731034071
Also - how much you wanna bet the NSA runs or has compromised more then half of the TOR nodes?

And to the whole "hurr durr they cant tell im using tor im l33t hax0r" - you can literally buy appliances that recognize TOR, along with other application traffic, no problem. The amount of these middleboxes you go through on the internet is insane
>>
>>731033928
I actually agree with the other anon. Hide in plajn sight and they're less likely to look at you.
I don't think linux is a trigger though, plenty of people are poor.
The point is, if you need to hide something you need to be sat in mcdonalds on a laptop you bought for cash.
Fucktards think they're safe and then go and log into their FB on the very next tab.
>>
>>731033928
Your ISP doesn't really care if you're using Tor, but those fuckers at the NSA intercepting all your network traffic might.
>>
>>731034359
So much this.

All about that metadata / correlation.
>>
>>731034286
There's a pretty decent chance that's true. You could easily run half the world's Tor nodes for a few million bucks a year. Of course if it is true you'll never hear about it, since they want to keep their honeypot. Anyone caught that way will go through parallel construction before trial.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Personally, I say mac on the desktop / Dev system, Linux on all the servers - Rhel or Debian stable.

Learn a bit of python and ruby, learn how to use vagrant, puppet, and docker, and you've got yourself a solid Dev stack.

Linux is only free if your time is worth nothing.
>>
>>731026743
It's free, for one. Newer versions tend to still work like the "classic" versions. Linux is really fucking great if you're
conservative about your electronics.
The fact that it's getting more and more games is fucking awesome too. I hope I can move to Linux full time soon. The games are what's holding me back, to be honest.
>>
At some point i guess its a a state of mind. A philisophy on computing. I dont think its something people are talked into.
>>
>>731036840
Yeah, you're right.
>can I play games on it?
>no
>can I use all the programs I've gotten used to when using windows?
>no
>can I use it without having to use the command line at some point?
>no
>does it do everything that windows does?
>for the most part no

That doesn't look very good to outsiders.
Linux is great for what it is, but it really isn't for everyone.

No.

I see you're using your valuable time very wisely here on 4chan.
>>
>>731037104
for the most part this is true, but only for "standard" linux desktops
for example, i'm posting from chromeos right now, which is based on linux, and it's about the most idiot proof computer ever
android is also based on linux, and millions of people use it every day
>>
>>731037428
Yeah, there are those. I haven't tried Chrome OS, but Android is pretty decent. What I have in mind then I say "Linux", however, is distros like Debian, Ubntu, OpenSUSE, Kali, etc.

Linux does everything gates can do and more. It's just abit fiddly at times. If anything linux opens up more opportunities.
I've never seen a windows user on gimp and whilst it pisses me off having to learn a new program if I ever get that triggered by it I can always drink some wine.... or bleach.
>>
>>731037752
windows gimp user here
not really sure what my point is, but hey

Linux can basically do what Windows does.

* Win has advantage for most games and extended hardware support.
* Lin has advantage for software development, research, study. Many major companies use that as a development platform.

For me, it's both in multi-boot, but some can use virtualization or remote access to combine best of two worlds.
>>
>>731037667
This was me. Now I make ~$200k /year as a result.

Hello!
You may be able to help.
I wanna take this guys image >>731036373
resize it and turn it into a . gif so the backghroud is see through.
I can do the .gif part but what's the best way to resize it so everybody who isn't an ant can view it?
>>
I only use Linux. But it's because I work in infosec. I think Win 7 was the best windows, but in terms of an Enterprise environment, Win10 Enterprise ain't bad. You just have to black hole some of the info it keeps trying to send to micro$haft and it's partners
>>
>>731038222
just pay for a 2nd hard drive anon 10gb will be more then you need for linux unless your ruing virtual box
>>
>>731038777
OSCP, anon?

Learn linux if you own or work for a business that requires it. Otherwise you're a fucking idiot wasting your time to prove to yourself you can learn a "hard" operating system and that somehow makes you better than a "normie".
>>
>>731038990
True.
But you only have to learn it once (or twice, I'm a slow learner), however been a microcuck is for life.
>>
>>731029219
this autism is killing me.

an IT professional who prefers macs, that also needs a mysql database for some reason, will terminal into a server running it not run it off their fucking personal laptop.
>>
>>731038990
ill be that idiot and never worrie about malwhere or any of the other windows problems any day Hey btw you need to defrag run scan disc and malwhere right now just leting you know your shitty windows is falling apart right now as you read this no worries normie

Learn to play violin if you own or work for a business that requires it. Otherwise you're a fucking idiot wasting your time to prove to yourself you can learn a "hard" instrument and that somehow makes you better than a "normie".
>>
>>731037752
No, Linux still lacks certain things that both Windows and Mac both have. Like a proper DAW. You can make the case that Linux has that because of Wine, but that's still a bit touch and go.
Linux is better than Windows in some ways, and Windows is better than Linux in some ways. Neither of them are great at absolutely everything.
>>
>>731039373
violin could get you laid. sperg more
>>
>>731039410
wine needs some work but its still far better then it was i see it runing new games and programs every up date
>>
>>731038990
Since when is Linux a "hard" operating system?
You sound like someone who tried Linux once, but was too retarded to know how to use it.
>>
>>731039417
Name 1 violinist that ever got laid ever? I dare you.

so can linux
>>
>>731039545
Agreed. I
>>
>>731039535
Apparently it is, I haven't used it since fucking...2007-2008-ish, and it was pretty shite back then. It is good to see, however, that they're making some progress on it. Hopefully, more developers will see that there's a demand for their software on the Linux platform, and we won't need Wine anymore because we'd have native support.
>>
>>731039712
ya i remember i started back with red hat mandrake and yellow dog i only realy use wine to play phantasy star online in ulitma it crash's now and then but im shocked it runs this now
game may be slow in spots but its doing it
>>
>>731039712
as soon as microsoft starts requiring everything to go through the windows store so they can take their cut, that will be the end of the windows dominance in gaming
valve is working on the linux steambox for this exact reason
>>
>>731039410
Linux does everything.
You may have to invest some time but eventually it will be a good little boy and do what it's told.
Unlike windows that will just throw an autismo fit and blue screen.
>>
>>731040013
for what it's worth, i haven't seen windows blue screen in about a decade of daily use
>>
>>731039849
I may have to try firing up some old games on my laptop, then. That could be pretty cool.
>>731039872
Oh yeah, Microsoft will just end up fucking themselves. It really is a great thing that Valve is run by a bunch of neckbeards.
>>
>>731038856
Nah, SANS
>>
With the exception of some games, I never have a problem that "Linux just can't do this"
>>
>>731040013
This :>>731040080

BSoD is extremely rare. The last time I saw one of those, it was because of a faulty SSD. Completely unrelated to the OS. Your argument is pretty much null and void because guess what, Linux does not do everything, and neither does Windows. Or Mac OS. Especially not Mac OS.
>>
>>731028387
Holoooooooo
>>
>>731040447
Linux does everything!
It was the 1st and only OS ever created.
It's that giant block you see in black and white pics with old school Thomas Edison light bulbs blinking away.
Bill just made it slightly more user friendly and profited.
With enough time and effort linux could knock a satellite out of orbit.
Limitless possibility.
