it's for people who want to think of themselves as music makers, not for people who actually make music

everyone just uses plugins on a computer now. you can literally do anything you can possibly imagine with a couple of good plugin synths, and a few good kontakt libraries.

Get a 60 dollar condenser learn to play real instrument and record better quality music than professional studios in the 40s it's not that hard

Before any of you autists spend money on this crap, pirate some PC based synthesizer software and see if you enjoy it.

I tried getting into electronic music production years ago. Blew hundreds of dollars on gear, and found out i wasn't really good at it nor did I enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

I agree that you can't do exactly-the-same-as-modular with plugins at the moment (but it is getting close with the softube and reaktor stuff)

The point is more that, if you know the in-the-box tricks to make your digital music sound "organic" and "analogue", all the marketing suggesting that you NEED all this analogue gear starts to become quite funny

Honestly when it comes to keyboards you're probably right. With a guitar or drum or anything made out of wood, it is easy to estimate the value of the instrument. Half of it is paying for the parts and the other half is the time/labor.

With a keyboard... you're just paying for specially designed buttons and the shell and the hardware inside, which isn't too fancy.

It's an incredible thing to stand in front of and use. The instant control you have over tiny aspects of the sound is incredible. And it can make noises no digital synth is capable of, things like using audio frequency square waves as a clock to trigger a sequencer simply can't be reproduced on digital synths. The big drawback is that it never makes the same noise twice, you spent ages setting up a patch, record it, tweak a couple of knobs then it's gone forever.

Analog synths are physically altering the electric signal with analog components. Hence why they are called "analog".

A computer is digital and the signal only turns into actual sound waves once it is finally emitted by the digital to audio converter hardware.

Computers and analog synths are fundamentally different in how they generate their sounds. Just because it has a bunch of wires and is huge doesn't make it analog.

I don't think being analog or digital would be a reason to make or to not make sound.
If you just know what sound is, it's a quick variation of air pressure, and to produce sound with electrical gear, you must have quick variations of voltage.
So if you can do shit like create a function made out of sines, and taking the output to go through a speaker, there's a slight chance you could hear something, but it all depends on how the data is encoded.
You could also patch it randomly and hear noises, I think that could be possible, but you could break the computer and the speakers
And it wouldn't be music, it would just be random noises
>>
>>730958405
An instrument makes noise. Your hands. Your vocal chords. The tone a running sink makes because the pipes are shitty. The wind.

Every genre of music is FULL of garbage. Derivative noise not worth listening to. Crap country music. Cheesy hair metal. Pretentious 70s prog-rock. Snobbish classical. Egotistical and materialistic gangsta-rap. Weak shoegaze. Poser goth. Simplistic grunge. Repetitive EDM.

An instrument does not make music worth or not worth listening to.

It is not a musician's or an instrument's responsibility to play good music for you.

It's your goddamn responsibility to get off your ass and find something you like.

Quit whining about the shit music in the world. We're all well aware it exists.

You should tell what modules you're using in your tracks
Maybe create a YT channel also ?
I find modular interesting, but the only things I can find when researching about it, are people making bleeps and bloops with $2000 of gear

I've listened to fantastic fucking drummers play with plastic buckets. The price you pay for your noisemaker is meaningless.

This

That's what I was saying. Analog instruments are altering the actual electric currents that would move speakers in a way that produces specific sound waves.

Digital instruments are just altering computer code and binary signals to create a mathmatical solution. When that final solution is sent to a specific component that component then turns it into a fluctuating electric current that would move a speaker.

It's why most digital instruments can't quite simlulate that "war" "organic" sound of analog. It's hard to define through computer code what happens to electricity inside a specific device.

I'm not saying analog is "better", it is just inherently different in how the sound is made.

ok, I must tell you one thing
Half of what you are saying is pure bullshit

> Analog instruments are altering the actual electric currents that would move speakers in a way that produces specific sound waves.

Yes that is true, and the signal produced is analog, because it goes through every possible value of intensity and not discrete values.
But your signal can be polluted with static noise, or your amps could alter you signal too

>Digital instruments are just altering computer code and binary signals to create a mathmatical solution.

Yes but Analog instrument are just altering an electric intensity to shape it like a mathematical function. The only difference is that you're working with discrete values, but, we're now able to go with values fine enough you couldn't hear the difference when a simulation is good enough

>It's why most digital instruments can't quite simlulate that "war" "organic" sound of analog

False, just listen to the last Justice album, it's all VST, and look at Arturia's VSTs (Arturia is an analog synth company)
Also, as analog is just equations, it's super easy for a computer to understand what's going on

And one last point
You're talking about DIGITAL / ANALOG
BUT, when talking about analog, you're talking about subractive synthesis, but with digital, you can use samples, FM etc .....
So basically Digital sounds better than analog in general.

I'm telling you this, and I only own one digital synth, all of my gear is analog, because I prefer analog, it's a question of taste, and how you feel it, and I prefer playing with analog.

Is this worth $800?

Or is $800 better spent somewhere else?
