Heck one of the first things I feel I learned in my studies was that one is not simply a philosopher. You're just a person, and later after you've shared some not-so-bad thoughts, other people describe you as a philosopher. It's like saying you're a writer when you've never written a damn book.

In general I agree with you, but some of my colleagues wouldn't. Some people believe that publishing philosophical writings makes one a philosopher, others prefer to distinguish philosopher from someone who simply does research in philosophers, reserving the name 'philosopher' for the ground-breaking thinkers.
