Serves a few purposes. I blow glass so I should know. Usually we put a flat spot under the bowl so that it doesn't roll over so it ain't that.
It is for grip especially when the piece gets too hot.
It's for design and to make the pipe look cool.
Aswell as alot of glass workers like to use them to hide too long marks and imperfections in the glass that would simply be too time consuming and therefore not cost effective to remove. Whack a bead on thereally and kids eat it up

My buddys used to grow theirs near a ditch outside Jackson ( near Sac ) and when they harvested they also hunted for shrooms.
