basic is just dumb, sometimes fun. it's not hard so don't let anyone tell you it is. other people have little hearts to go along with their little wieners and will try to drag you down, but just ignore them.

you'll get yelled at and shit, but it's all a game. just do what you're told and try your best. it's 9 weeks....nothing.

oh, actually here is my big advice. remember that after basic, you'll basically relearn everything, and lose contact with everyone. all these dumb mother fuckers are going to act like you'll be friends for life. you're never going to see them again. don't bother making plans or god forbid get fucking basic training tattoos. the unit you're in at basic is just for organizational purposes and there is no pride in being part of it. don't fucking get a tattoo, don't fucking get a graduation ring. they're gonna bring these stupid vendors to you trying to get you to buy t-shirts and shit.....JUST DON'T.

Nobody ever warned how sick everybody gets while in basic. You WILL come down with something. Colds , flu, scabies, pink eye, poison ivy, pneumonia, and whatever else you can think of from living in close proximity with a bunch of dirty fucks from all corners of the country.

Oh and you'll be on your feet all day everyday so be prepared to see your tootsies get fucking demolished. Lost feeling in my left big toe in basic and its never come back.

But really it aint so bad. Everyday is long but looking back it wasn't very difficult. Shit is simple as fuck. Just do what they tell you, go through the motions, and you'll make it just fine.

I was in the AF in 2000 and basic sucked and was a ton of shit to keep track of and it was extremely stressful. Went Army in 2015 and holy shit it's summer camp. By far the easiest paycheck I've ever gotten and I fucking pulled 18 year old girls left and right.

Depends on what your MOS is. Infantry basic and other jobs basic are very different. In intensity and style. I was 11B. First steps are getting the rules down and learning to follow basic orders as a group. Constant smoke sessions (physical workouts to the point of muscle failure) getting you used to the full schedule of training. Then comes the learning. Weapons, basic tactics, equipment. Lots of ruck marches that start low (3miles) end up becoming 10-15miles. (They suck). Get used to wing screamed at, and learning to scream back. Volunteer when asked tho people say not too. Just do what your told and for the love of God don't tell your drill seargent it's your birthday.

If the Army offers you Airborne school in AIT after basic, which they often do, TAKE THAT SHIT.

You're gonna be ragged out. You'll have survived basic, then another 2-4 months or so in AIT for your job, and you're going to want to say fuck more training. You're gonna wanna get to your duty station and start partying and living normal life again.

Here's the thing. When you're in AIT, you don't have a unit yet. You're under the TRADOC (training command, Army wide) budget. AKA, unlimited funds. When you get to your unit, you're on THEIR budget, and they might not want to pay out to send you to the school.

Airborne is one of the best schools the Army has. It's parachuting. You get to fucking skydive in one of the safest settings (parachute riggers are beasts. They're fucking great at their job, because they have to jump with a random number of chutes that they packed, so every one they pack they assume is for THEM and do it right).

Plus, you get distinguished. You wear a badge that gets respect. You wear a different color beret, different boots, etc.

You even have a distinctive greeting, only used by fellow Airborne soldiers. When we pass an officer, an NCO, whatever, instead of "good morning, Sir", it's "Airborne, Sir." If he is, he'll say it back. "Airborne, son."

It's a club. Be in that club.

My options for Airborne went to nada after AIT.

I scored really highly on the ASVAD (have a PhD now in the civilian world), and they promised me the sun, moon, and fucking stars. All I wanted was to be an MP. They hyped me up to go intelligence. I was on board.

Then the color vision test at MEPS dried up my options to: Truck driver (no), cook (fuck no), or admin. It was admin or not join, so, fuck it. Air conditioning and being surrounded by women sounded alright. I wonder why they didn't offer medical? I would've taken medical.

Well, live and learn.

I also got stationed in Alaska for 4 years because I put Hawaii Hawaii Hawaii as my wish list at MEPS. Alaska and Hawaii are the same division: US Army Pacific. I got greedy, and spent 4 years in the winter wonderland for it.
