>>
>>730040424
Not the same dude. But typically, be really good throughout training and they'll try harder to send you where you want.

Anything overseas requires a few more screening processes just to avoid sending out "risky" people--like those marines that raped local women.
>>
>>730039753
What MOS? East or West coast? Dont take it too seriously man.. Seriously please dont be one of those moto fags you starts fights because all of you take the DI super seriously. >>
>>730040424
29 palms has improved a lot over the past 5 years. Its not nearly as bad as it used to be. Weather obviously still sucks though. Your chances of getting stationed somewhere is completely random and dependent on your MOS. My MOS school instructors allowed us to pick our stations depending on how well you did in the class. That is very uncommon.

>>730041362
Id tell you that youre a fucking idiot for being a grunt for that reason but it wont matter a bit to you. Theres almost no point in joining the military for 2 years. You go through basic and then MOS school and then you have like a year and a half left? Cmon dude.. you probably wont even deploy nor will you get full GI Bill benefits. If you do 4 years in the Marines you can work on college during for free and go to a university for free after. Also if your 6 months away from getting out you can take welding classes, auto mechanic classes, etc for free at an apprentiship without even having to go to work.

Things like that.

Youll most likely go to a RADBN (radio battalion) after MOS school. Make sure to get all your certificates and take as many follow on courses you can when you hit the fleet. You might be able to get a contracting job with the government after your enlistment for 6x the amount youll get paid in the military for 1 year in your contract.

I only know about US military. Not sure if youre the guy from the UK. I went to an Army military school but joined the Marines. Personally i would join the Marines for the whole pride thing but im bias. Go where you can get a better job. Dont just settle with infantry. If you want to go on patrols and (maybe) kill people, there are other jobs where you will be with infantry but will set you up better for after your service.

Intel is one (if you hit the fleet and go to an infantry battalion), Radio operator, etc. Dont let your pride get to you and go infantry cause you think its so "badass." You wont be thinking how "badass" it is when you go on 20 mile hikes and eat MREs for every meal for a few weeks to a month. Youll soon realize there is no glory in it when you hit the fleet. It fades away soon after. Pick your job wisely and pick one that will help you after the military.

>>
>>730045014

You may not even need a degree (for the AF at least). They base how high of a rank you start out as by amount of school credits you have earned. I want to say E-3 cutoff is 60. I went in with almost 90, so I started out with E-3 pay, even in basic.
>>
>>730044998
Haha thats pretty elusive.

so being a guy with a degree who is enlisted, just go into officer. Id you don't have the degree though yet, then def go enlist. Nothing like having uncle pay for your degree.
>>
>>730045297

There's a waiver for just about everything, as well. Just depends on how much effort the recruiter wants to put forth in getting you enlisted.

>>
>>730045555
even as an officer, your degree wont mean shit but promotion points, so feeling your life is wasted is subjective. youll feel like an even bigger pile of shit when you cant lead or motivate your guys because they look at you as just some butterbar faggot shitbag. and OCS wont teach you everything, and actually teaches alot of things WRONG. i was a scout, and giving a landnav course once. we had a super smart LT in our platoon but he was an officer first, and tried telling me i was teaching it wrong. he starts teaching and everything he said was wrong.

dont be that guy. go enlisted, learn the army, learn the joes, earn respect, go officer. youll fair much better

>>
Army Medic here, do not enlist. Go Air Force or just go to college. Getting a medboard was the best thing to ever happen to me.
>>
>>730046025
It's simple, dude. Except for one, every JO I've ever had always defer to the opinions of the more senior enlisted (not just senior rank, but time also). Why? Because those guys are the experts in their field.

Go straight officer, listen to the experts. Know your fucking manuals.
>>
>>730046113
everyone gives a fuck about respect.... youre leading troops. and depending on mos, maybe into combat. you dont want some cherry butterbar leading you into combat, cause you wont come home. if thats your attitude, please collect your dd214 and gtfo
>>
>>730046025
I agree to a point anon, but being in that situation, where you are doing the same job as a bunch of folks just out of high school feels bad. Anyways, a bad leader is gonna be a bad leader regardless of experience. Only thing i can really say, is just cause you are superior in rank doesn't make you better. It just means they think you can be a fucking adult. In other words, be able to pull your head out your ass and do what needs to be done. And instead of being a whiny prick, put your men before yourself. Ship, Shipmate, Self is the navy way.
>>
>>730046267
I got out with 80% disability nedically retired thanks to getting caught robotripping and smoking salvia. It sucked for like a year because they stripped my rank and pulled my sec clearance but now the military is paying for my weed bill. If you don't have any sort of medical condition you'll probably get base lockdown for a few weeks, stripped of all rank, and get a general discharge(which you can appeal in 6 months and get your GI bill back. Don't worry too much about it, it wont affect shit outside the military as your SIF/PIF doesn't follow you to civland. Good luck buddy whatd you get popped for?
>>
>>730046421
No, dude. You don't have to have respect to accomplish any of that. You can be former enlisted and be shitty as fuck and get your men killed. Or you can be a professional fucking JO, understand you don't know everything and the people you have went to SPECIALIZED TRAINING for their shit, you didn't.

Respect will come and go.
>>
>>730046505
the problem though that i seen in the army, is the officers that dont go enlisted first are always over entitled little pricks. the power gets to them, nobody likes them. and they shouldnt even be serving. every officer and senior enlisted should understand that one day they may need to lead men into combat. do you want some 20 year old butterbar whos never been a private leading you? i sure as fuck dont. if youre in it for the long haul, enlisted first always. but if youre just a money whore, then whatever youre a shitbag anyways
>>

>>
>>730046828
Hardly, if at all, from what I've seen. It's the "Other Than Honorable" or worse that fucks you.

>>730046884
Respect matters if you're a child at heart. Also, if you don't respect a JO just because he's not prior enlisted, that's your issue. Like I said, all but one of my JOs who were never prior-Enlisted knew their limitations. They deferred to the more knowledgeable enlisted guys.

Our enlisted and officers back each other up. Prior-Enlisted has nothing to do with that.

My CO is prior enlisted and total garbage, no one likes or respects him, but we still do what he says.

Do you get my point? Prior enlisted doesn't necessarily mean better, any more than higher rank does, and definitely doesn't demand respect.

Be professional, treat people like the technical experts that they are, and the respect will come. Or don't. Because the enlisted will still have to obey.
>>
>>730047376
i dont remember i stopped trying to get them when i realized the process to go through was too much for my short level of patience. but i do remember that everything i seen said a dishonorable was a disqualifier. general wont hurt you at all, most places dont even know what a general is. worst case just say "general discharge under honorable conditions"
>>
>>730047485

>>730047525
then you just happened to have good officers, the general consensus from what ive experience over 3 duty stations and 6 years, was my officers who were never enlisted were always shitheads who thought they knew it all, and used their rank for everything. thats my point, normally when people go officer first, thats how they turn out.

and no, respect isnt for children. respect is everything, and if you believe otherwise, you should not ever lead anyone. every leader should be respected by his troops. if hes not, it wont end well. leadership is telling your men to do something, and they WANT to do it for you. thats true leadership

You're not even trying to understand the point I was making. FYI, I've also been LPO for years. With NAMs and a Sailor of the Year award. So, I have lead people. I don't demand respect. I trust people to know what to do.

And if they disagree with me, I tell them to show me in the written instructions, where I'm wrong, and gladly accept the correction. Do they respect me? Maybe. But the performance of my division speaks for itself. I don't set out to get people's respect because why would I? The respect will come if I deserve it, or won't if I don't.

But enough masturbation, my point is simple: Respect isn't everything, don't go out of your way to gain it. If you deserve it, you'll get it.

Not personally military, but have plenty of friends and family who are/were.

What I've heard on this subject is that if you're an officer, never forget that you're a generalist while the nco's under you are specialists. While it's good if you know how to do their job, most often you won't. If that's the case, don't EVER pretend otherwise. If you act like you could effortlessly do their job for them they will know you're full of shit and fucking hate you for it. But if you're clear on the fact that you make the decisions but they're doing the work, they'll actually respect you.

It really depends on rate, I'm YN so it's not as fast as some, but some of the fastest rates can make e7 in like 6ish years if you bust ass. Even my BMC made chief, got masted and brought back to 1st class, and made chief again in a total of 9 years.

>>
>>730049550
The big question... Fore or Aft?
>>
>>730051045
No, takes 2 years to get from PFC to SPC if you start out as a PFC. Then to get to an E5, it depends on your MOS and what you've done. You have to go through WLC, (Warrior leadership course) unless it's changed name since I've been out, then get the points to actually get E5, usually takes 1-2 years depending on how good you are as an E4 and a soldier. If you're well liked, do any type of schools (AA, airborne, etc), get 100s or close on your PT scores, go to classes, etc, it'll be easier to get to E5. To get to E6 takes A HELL of a lot more points, depending on your MOS. Some MOS's it's impossible unless you're in for ~5-8 years in all. NCO promotions are greatly dependent on your MOS.

>>
>>730051917
Oh, I mean is it not the same for coast guard? Dependent on your MOS or job occupation in the CG? I don't think E5's and E6's just get promoted because they've been in for a certain amount of years.

Well of course fucking not. If most did that advice would be pointless. I'm saying that given the choice, one would waay be better off just going officer and leading with that in mind than fucking off a bunch of years to be treated like shit and paid like shit as an enlisted.

As I said I'm not personally military, but as far as respect for experience and dealing with dumbshit officers who think they know everything; I understand pretty well.

My grandfather was a navy W-4 in Vietnam. (note there there was no W-5 then) He served on a ship that ran supply runs up and down the Maicong. But because he wasn't *technically* a CO he couldn't be the skipper, and the Navy instead would send send some fresh faced Ensign straight out of the academy (and often high school) to command. So what's the first thing these idiots would always do? Tell everyone who he expected everyone to come out on the deck in their dress whites so he could inspect how well they polished their fucking shoes.

In the middle of Vietnam. In the DEEP shit.

My grandfather's reaction? "Go fuck yourself. It'll be a cold day in hell when I or any of the men do that shit." Cue dumbass Ensign screaming that he'll have his ass when they get back to port, kp in Nome Alaska, blah blah blah. Grandfather's response? "Sure, good luck with that."

Why was he so unconcerned? Well, do I really need to clarify what would happen to a US military officer in dress whites standing around in the open in Vietnam? Yeah.

So Capt. "IKnowEverything" would promptly get blown away by a sniper. Then they'd make their supply run, get into port and get asked:

>"Where's your skipper?"
>"Skipper's dead."
>"When'd he die?"
>"First day."
>"We'll get you a new skipper.

This happened over and over without fail. Just lather, rinse, repeat.
>>
>>730052638

So basically it's jump through hoops and roll the dice.

Still, E5 in the other branches doesn't come until 3 years in, so that's a major move up.
>>
>>730053138

I've taken forensic science and psychology class in hs and will be doing criminalology in collage in the city I'm talking about.

You can't go wrong. Both branches are the top in quality of life. Coast Guard might be better for family, and we have a decent amount of adventure if you're on a cutter, but airforce has a much broader world presence, much more funding, and probably more respect. Me and my wife are both CG, and im aiming for officer, and she's a cs, so we're going to go far. It's all what you make it. I personally like the smallness factor of the CG. I can't go somewhere without seeing someone who I know, or knows me, my wife, or my aunt. It's definitely all family.

Yeah my GPA is pretty much a 3.0 and my ACT score is like a 20, I'm not concerned about grades.

They always make you do a year on the beat, but your degree means that you make detective in a snap. Stay away from undercover bullshit.

BTW the salary start is 40k and goes from there especially if you've got at least a bachelor's degree. Also I'm concerned about the way my friends feel about it. They aren't the innocent type, they don't really like cops, mainly from experience, but they really respect the troops. They just don't see the importance of law enforcement. And I'm not saying they are on the same level as the military, just that they deal with hard shit too.

If only I had more lives to live that I could do it all.

I feel it. I was in school for aeronautical engineering, so I would have done well going airforce as well. I'll never know, though.

At what age would you consider it not the best option to join AF, if you have a CS degree with a high GPA and some work experience (with gaps)?
