Assuming you have two people working the same job, different companies pay differently which can be a factor.

Assuming it's the same company maybe one person is more qualified than the other. Even a small edge can mean a bigger offer at the time of hiring.

Assuming both people are equally skilled on paper it could be that one person just asked for more money.

Assuming one person was just offered more, it could be a situation of timing. The company might be doing better that week/month/year and can add in an extra 1k-2k.

My first place said they wouldn't give me a raise without a higher degree from college, so I left.

If they won't give it to you, but you know your worth that, find an employer who agrees. Trust me, they're out there. I've never been at the same place for more than a year and a half and each new place was happy to steal me away at a higher cost.

Work as a supervisor at a hardware store. There's three of us. Myself and two women, all under 30. We're all on the same hourly rate. I earnt nearly 3k more over the course of 12 months. Why?

WHen I was in school in the 90s (figure I was in the first grade in 90-91 and 10th grade in 99-00) Many of the schools had special Stem for girls events where professors would show up and teach special classes just for girls and they had university students even tutor them for a while. Like there was a huge push for them and this resource that was open to them was closed to the boys (there was other events but not gender specific). Many girls I grew up with took advantage of this and had University professors write their letters of recommendations because of their access to them from these programs.

What surprised me though was how few took advantage of it.

I always thought it was a myth but recently I was promoted to management and I can see employees pay history. It's pretty real. I know these people well, and I know their qualifications. What I can see is that an experienced woman with a PhD is worth the same as an inexperienced man with a MS degree.
