The yearbook was mostly finalized at the time of the shooting. There was an insert that was printed, pics coming.

They've got their photos in there, but no, nothing really of the shooting in the body of the yearbook.

I was one of the first groups out, actually.
Was in the cafeteria at the time, in the armpit of the iconic staircase surveillance cam photo. When the first explosions went off, everyone pushed back towards where I was sitting. One of the janitors opened the doors to the auditorium, chilled in there for a while. One of the stoners that I was sitting by kept saying "this is the craziest 4-20 ever man..." when we were in there.

Eventaully, janitor w/ radio contact to office heard we were clear from the doors we came in, out tthe foreign language hall... group I was with ran out there, across the street ,and itno the park.

My mom kept a ton of papers/etc, highlighted shit from that day. >Pic related.

I went to a high school with the initials chs and I had a student teacher in my geometry class who was at columbine during the shooting. He claimed his girlfriend was shot and killed.

kek, no.
What's kind of funny about that whole thing, what was it ... cassie's challenge or whatever? Us as a class were shielded from a lot of that bullshit.

>>729950572
So we sat out in the park across the street for a bit. We had ran across Pierce just as the first first-responders were arriving, so the road hadn't been barricaded yet.
More groups of students had run out to the park, eventually there was another large explosion, panic, and everyone in the park scattered back into the neighborhood.

I had a paper route in that neighborhood, kind of knew the area. Chance, fate, hand of god, whatever... I knew one house was a police officer's house. Wife had the front door open, was calling everyone in from the street. Stayed there for several hours, watching the news on the small TV in the living room.

Phone lines were hard to get at the time, switch was overloaded... cellphones weren't a thing in '99, so I had to try for a while to get a line to let my parents know I was okay.

Late that afternoon my dad was finally able to get through the traffic jam/barricades and pick me up.

kek, bunch of old post-its from past threads i've done.

One thing I remember, image burned into my mind, as I was making the corner around the vending machiens in the cafeteria, between the auditorium and business/specialed/language hallway.... In front of the pepsi machine, a bomb had detonated. Big black mark over two floor tiles, and the bottom of the machine had busted out. Fire alarms were going off. Didn't remember seeing any sprinklers at the time.

>>729950574
Considering the number of high schools across the country, and that there's only 26 letters in teh alphabet, leaves a better than 1/26 chance of having that acronym.

School was ~2000 students, so it's certainly possible.

>Chatham
wat

Chatfield.

There was a few weeks while the district figured out what to do with 2000 students who no longer had a school to go to. Students/staff were busy grieving, processing what happened, funerals/remembrances, etc.

Eventually the district decided chatfield students would go in the morning on a shortened schedule, they'd move out and columbine would move in for the afternoon on a shortened schedule.

Not much work got done in general... some teachers wanted to pick up where they left off like nothing happened, others were a lot more laid back and let the students decide how to finish the year.

They were just "the columbine killers". Biggest thing was "15 deaths" or "13 deaths", wanting to keep the two separate from their victims.

But they were still students - no reason to omit the content in the yearbook, and besides, it had already gone to production by the time the shooting happened.

>>729953365
I (and I think most of the students) handled things pretty well - better than the staff/parents did. Innocence of youth, different world view, having peers to work through the trauma with, whatever... My mom took it a lot harder than I did.

Sophomore year, being back in the building (granted after a major overhaul) was a bit of a relief, we're moving on, and a little emotional.

>>729953535
Hard to say, really. If the two had shortcutted through the auditorium I don't know that i'd have made it. If their propane bombs had gone off ... again, hard to say with where I was, as far back in the cafeteria as I was.

I've never been in a situation like it since, but I also have a little bit of an advantage should I ever find myself in a similar situation, knowing how I react mentally to that stress.

the Columbine leaks of 2005 are what brought me here. Police pic leaks or something, some security cam leaks, some police evidence pics, some candids that the police gathered from the days before, with shooters caches of arms before the shootings etc.

Columbine and Chatfield were (still are, I guess) the two big ones in the area.

College was nice... I was just another cowboy.
When people would ask where I was from, it was usually just "Colorado".

But most people were fine with just "Colorado".

I had some dad or uncle of one of the victims come to my school and talk for an hour or so a few years ago. Normies were crying and shit, it was terrible. Is there any immediately noticable lasting effects on the school/community? Columbine jokes are already really annoying, do the kids there make them more often or is it a sensitive subject?

Nah, this is more of an "ama" than /r/.

Like I said in >>729950994, as a class we were insulated from a lot of that aftermath/fallout bullshit, "plz no bully", "b friends lol" unicorns-and-rainbows nonsense.
As a class, we bonded pretty tight after that. We had just been through a major, world-wide broadcast event that would change history.... we didn't really need that preachy shit. It was kind of weird how much we were forced to mature.

As far as the community goes ... Today, it's been long enough there really isn't much mention of it anymore. There's the "Columbine memorial ---->" signs outside clement park, I ride by the school every now and then (still live in the area). About all you'll see now is a quick news story "remembering the 13" on evening local news. Usually some remembrance events at the memorial today. I didn't go.

More or less, yeah. Library was still under construction, but the building/atrium had been gone through and restored/cleaned up.

By that time, most people had gotten over the grieving and just wanted to move on. New class of freshmen moving in, hard to say but I'd imagine they felt a little "outside the group" talkign with upperclassmen. My senior year graduation was the last of those "that had been there" besides the staff, so that was kind of tough for teachers/admin.

10th anniversary was a little bit of fanfare, lots of reunions/memorials.
I know I have a newspaper clipping from the "10 year" event, but I'm not sure where it is. I'll keep looking. It's somewher ein here... .

Lots of hugs from the family, and just time to decompress and process what had happened.

Cafeteria/library was the biggest change, structurally. >pic related
Classrooms were mostly unchanged, but the fire alarm sirens were all replaced (>muh ptsd), new paint in the halls...

During the time we were at Chatfield, students all made some tiles. The idea was to have all the hallways with a row of tiles the graduating students '99-02 did. There were bullshit special-snowflake, "Religion doesn't belong in the schools!" so rather than separate out tiles that had any "religious" symbology (I'm sure the word you were looking for was "symbolism." What is the ssss-himbolism there?), they just said "we're not doing the tile thing anymore, what's up there is going to stay but nothing new is going up".

>>729959073
wat.jpg

>>729959882
It was a big thing. Sort of a "holy shit even rich white suburbia isn't immune from this kind of violence" thing. Guess I didn't really get the magnitude of it for a month or two.

While we were at Chatfield, there was a row of tables in teh common area for donated stuff.
These tables were overflowing. Backpacks, markers, highlighters, notebooks, pens/pencils, calculators, paper, binders/folders, all sorts of office/school supplies donated from all over the world.

Lots of sympathy cards on the wall as well, probably not unlike what deployed soldiers get from schools today.

Huge puff of white-gray smoke outside. Being a freshman I really didn't know the whole "senior prank" thing, like was this normal? Well, sure, they "were a thing", but nothing like what you're used to seeing today.

Maybe 1 in 20 students had one. And we're talking those old-ass Nokias, with the black/white dot-matrix screen that played Snake ... Texting wasn't even popular at the time.

My connection to the internet at the time was a 56k modem. Did have "broadband" at school, but its use was highly supervised. Whitehouse.com was a porn site back then....

It is, but it'd been remodeled.
The horizontal supports were the floor of the library. That floor got knocked out, library became an atrium in the cafeteria. New library was installed on the upper level off the corner near the gym.

Not really "uncomfortable". I've moved on, it's a part of my history. Don't really like talking about it to people I don't know fairly well, and when I do it's usually one-on-one.
I've got a coworker who's big-time prepper/gun-nut ... got to talking guns one day, he carries, i carry, blah blah, "what got oyu into it?" ... my reply was "Got some time? Let's go to the conference room and talk..."

>>729963685
How do you see the stigma of the event evolving years down the road? Five, ten more?

Still in contact with anyone from the time? Is it still impactful on you, as a permanent scar, or just a distant memory?

Appreciate your presence friend. You are always welcome here.

After the event there was all kinds of talk about "how to prevent this from happening again".

Metal detectors at all the doorways.
Clear backpacks.
Uniforms.
Those were the biggest ideas thrown out there.

As students, we nearly unanimously disagreed with all that shit. Nobody wanted it - it was just shit brought up by the "good idea fairies" - administrators sitting in the district offices, parents worried about their kids, etc. Knee-jerk reactions.

We just wanted to be high school students, doing high school stuff, and not live under a microscope.

Obviously had a lot more support/resources in the school in the years after that - better cameras/surveillance was installed, more police/law-enforcement presence, and there was almost always mental health professionals there for both staff and students.

>>729964548
kek, thanks. Like I said earlier, i've been here a while and I kind of hate what this board's become.
I think the stigma has plateaued - it's not going to get any better, or any worse. People have moved on, several of the staff have since retired, principal's retired. The memorial will be around for a while, but it's not really in "public view" from any of the streets - have to go back into clement park, and from the parking lot it's maybe 200yds of brick walkway to the memorial itself.

Still in contact with some friends, but by and large i've moved on. I still live in the area, every now and then I run into someone ... classmate working at the deli at the grocery store... 3rd grade teacher recognized me at a restaurant a few years back, that was kind of weird.

Can't really say "for sure", but I know in a way it's part of the reason I carry and shoot law enforcement quals every now and then.
Could kind of justify it to myself that I don't want to be defenseless should I ever find myself in a similar situation. And like I said, having been through an event like that, I know how I'm going to react.

I think they (district, admin, architects/construction team) did a pretty good job with it.
Didn't have the resources (financial, real-estate) to doze it and start fresh, so they did what they could with what they had.
I think the removal of the library was a good idea. Really don't think anyone would have been comfortable going in there after what happened. Today it might be a different story, but back then? Fuck no.

>>729965076

There were bullshit special-snowflake, "Religion doesn't belong in the schools!" so rather than separate out tiles that had any "religious" symbology, they just said "we're not doing the tile thing anymore, what's up there is going to stay but nothing new is going up".

I suppose that makes sense. Cant say I know how I would react. Closest I got was hs a couple years back in my theater class. There was some report of a loose gunman in the area so the school went into full lockdown and everyone hid. I was hidden with my like 8 classmates and our teacher in the prop closet. We were all oddly close but that's theater for you. There was swat teams crawling the roof and clearing the halls and shit. I didn't feel worried, so much as interested and "alert" if that makes sense.

Seems to be that post columbine response and such. You inspired our perception.

One of the more interesting aspects, looking back on the incident, was seeing how people react differently to that stress.
Some people just freeze, unable to process what's going on. Completely locked up, ctrl-alt-delete type of shit.
Other people panic. Dude I was in the auditorium with, "This is the craziest 4-20 ever man... craziest 4-20 ever..." Wouldn't shut up.
I was definitely confused, felt that "fight-or-flight" kick in, a bit of that herd-mentality, but at the same time I was still thinking things through. Before you get to the doors to the auditorium, there's a bathroom. A few people ran in there, but I knew there wasn't an "out" - once you're in, the only way out is the way you came in. Auditorium gave me not only the door I went in, but another behind the stage near the kitchen area, and two on opposite halls on teh upper level. Many more options there.

Military trains some of that into you, but at the same time there's always people who just mentally can't cut it. I was never military, but with some of the work I do now I work with LE/fire/med and the occasional military teams.

>>729966400
Correct. Not really sure why, especially since they targeted "the jocks".

>>729966894
Their shit was fucked. Things didn't detonate as expected, including a large propane cylinder IED found later that day in the corner of the cafeteria. They waited for that to go off but it never did, so they made entry with "Plan B".

We got a tour of the building after it had been cleared, but before the major renovations had started. Bullet holes hadn't been patched yet, there was still glass in places where windows had been blown out. Some crime-scene markers were still up.
Weren't allowed in the library though.

It was nice, comforting I guess? Not really the right word for it... to see what went down and the extent of the event.

The more emotional day was the first day "back in class" at Chatfield.

Distinctly remember my band teacher holding back tears saying to us "It's really good to see all of you again".

Sci teacher (kind of a bitch, cheerleading coach (and fat as hell, kind of ironic) really didn't care for me as a band nerd) wanted to pick up right with class like nothing happened.

Spanish teacher was still working through the event mentally. First day back, first 5 minutes of class, she's telling us how much better this school is protected against another attack - how the room we're in had exterior windows for an escape and the hallway to the door could be barricaded a lot easier than the columbine room could.
I had an "uhh ... that's weird" reaction to the rest of that class.

I would say military training, or some sort of "survivalist" scenario.
Push that stress level beyond your comfort zone, and throw in the thought of extreme pain/injury/death if you fuck up.
Been a few times since where shit goes sideways ... fall back on training and emergency plans, manage the scene, and deal with what happens.

In college I got into rodeo. It was always a source of amusement to me when the big "tough guys" - wrestler, football-player, "jock" type wanted to give bullriding a go. You're in chute 3, use my rope/glove, put this vest on, here's a quick run-down of what's gonna happen... and even vs. 2000lbs of angry hamburger, some of these "tough guys" couldn't handle it mentally. They'd probably do fine physically. And other people enjoyed the hell out of it.

Closest I got to "the action" was between the auditorium and business/special-ed/foreign-language hallway, before going down the foreign-language hall and out the door at the end. If someone's intent on causing harm, they're going to break laws to do it. More laws isn't going to fix the problem.

Awareness, openness, and a general change in attitudes among the population is what's going to fix/improve the situation. Realizing someone has the motivation to carry out something like that, then either stepping in or escalating that to someone who will. Mental health care in this country is very broken, and all this special-snowflake, safe-space, omnisexual-pangender-whateverthefuck nonsense isn't helping.

Right now ... granted, I'm kind of a proponent of firearms as a tool for "the good guys" - This "gun-free zone" shit has to stop. If a teacher's willing to go through the training and carry a firearm, i'm all for it. And nobody has to know, nor should anyone know, unless there's an incident where lethal force should be applied.

Yeah, that and explosions.
First big boom came from outside. In the cafeteria there were a couple more explosions/gunshots. Kind of hard to tell what was what, but when it's loud enough to hear inside an auditorium, it's big.
And once I had made it to the park across the street, there were a few more small explosions, then one bigger one that sent everyone running back into the neighborhood.

>>729971477
Had a pretty good idea the way things were going down that there'd be multiple injuries, possibly fatalities.

For years my mom had a hard time when she'd hear sirens near an intersection in town just south of a police substation.... she was at that intersection when she heard what was going on.

It was all over the news here in the UK. I remember fuckers blaming music for influencing them.
It was like a flash back to the days of playing LPs backwards for hidden messages.

Thanks for the thread OP and the nostalgia feels.

I still blast KMFDM, Manson, Rob Zombie/White Zombie, Rammstein, et al. sometimes. Noone (except the neighbors who get to listen to it unwillingly) really cares what kind of music you're into.

Pic unrelated.

have you read the basement tape transcripts op?

they tried to ban manhunt in britain because a murderer used a screwdriver
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1468088/Manhunt-computer-game-is-blamed-for-brutal-killing.html

its just people looking for a tangible reason or a petty excuse

it didn't get banned because it would be pointless same as banning music

what a thread
