Not OP, but as a long time fan of the manga and subsequent series I actually loved it.
It was a 2 hour Easter egg of shit only hardcore fans would recognize. Beat Takashi is a total badass. I typically hate Scarlett Johansson for anything other than porn and didn't find her atrocious as the major.
They made changes to some things (Batou is not full prosthetic, the majors mother is alive and didn't die in a plane crash), but they nailed the feeling flawlessly. They mainly focused on the feel of the Oshii movie; but touched on every other iteration to some degree large or small.
This movie is for fans and it's rewarding to fans. If you're not a fan, don't see it.

The GitS series is all about trading ones identity away for the benefits of existence in a better-than-human life. As such, race is a construct hardly even recognized anymore in the series. The major is Japanese; but isn't made to look that way at all as a cyborg.
Not to mention the fact that anime/manga was designed to caricature westerners. Big eyes ring a bell? People bitching about whitewashing clearly haven't done their homework on the origins of that style of animation. If anything is racist it's Japan's portrayal of westerners. Don't see us crying about that.

Sure, the dialogue wasn't as deeply interesting as anything else in GITS, but it had just enough of those slower introspective moments for me. They go by quick, but I appreciated that they were sprinkled in there.

Yeah I honestly don't know how they would adapt Akira. Especially considering what happens to Tetsuo, it'd be a little awkward to translate to live action.
GITS on the other hand is definitely more suited to a hollywood live action adaptation since at its most simplest form, it's a police procedural story. I'm glad they went for it as well, and I personally really enjoyed it for what it was (an adaptation).

Yeah, I would just not bother with Akira. I think that a Cowboy Bebop adaptation would be cool though. On a surface level, the space battles remind me of Star Wars and it does take influence from a lot of Western films so it could work pretty well.
