Did you know that SSID are NOT required to be ASCII, it simply is a binary stream? One can create an SSID on some routers via editing a backup image of the router settings that include <CR> <LF> or other nonesense that makes it difficult for people to use your wifi.

One could have a virtual wifi channel using the name, Free Guest, no password.
and include a backspace or something that precludes people with Lesser Platforms from accessing it.

i created a simple SSID with an Ü in an all caps name. It fucked up my wife's laptop as it was using windows, it had a work VPN tunnel and a custom driver for wifi connection and setup. Try as we could it would Neither connect automatically on auto-detection/selection or manual entry of that SSID.

Apparently the de facto requirement for SSID is text, but it can be any octet stream of a certain maximum length.

hijinx will be made when you change your neighbor's open/passcodeless wifi to one with a name containing an extra non-printing character. there are tables of MAC address ranges and Make&Model, and lists of default login/pw for routers.
