Is joining the US military worth it?
I'm aware of the benefits, but am still unsure if it's worth the sacrifice.

It's a lot of training. It was almost a year, when I went through. After that, it's fucking dope. Chill in the squadron when you're not flying, then kick Army grunts out the paratroop doors and shit. Fucking. Love. It.

So at normal bases its usually M-F 0700-1500, 1500-2300, or 2300-0700. I'm at attached to a guard unit meow and we work four 10 hour days. Deployed its six 12 hour days..

You have to be sure about wanting to do it. It requires a lot of time, discipline, and effort. You won't have much free time and won't see family or friends for months on end but it seperates you from the NEETs.

If you do:

> get anything and everything that the recruiter promises you in writing, EVERYTHING....otherwise they'll tell you whatever the fuck you want to hear and you'll end up in the ass end of buttfuck no-where doing a job that is nothing close to what you asked for.

> if you have any intelligence and got decent scores on the ASVAB, do yourself a favor and join the airforce.

> if you don't like basketball-americans, you will really hate the army and the navy, and the marines aren't much better in that department.

> whatever you do, be smart, and take a specialty that has a high-paying civilian equivalent job to match what you do for when you get out, othewise you'll either be stuck in the military forever or working in fast-food/bouncing at shitty nightclubs when you get out.

The military is a great opportunity, but don't think it can't suck tremendous balls if you aren't smart about it.

Remember, unless you are fucking rambo, you want to be in the rear with the gear, watching all the basketball-americans be cannon fodder and walking IED detectors while you sit in a air-conditioned trailer.
>>
>>729823733
Save. Your. Fucking. Money.

Don't be an idiot and just join to be able to get a fucking Camaro and shoes and useless things. Save and invest so you can set yourself up later in life.

I'm dead serious man. It's a great opportunity but you need to understand what comes with it.
>>
Any service /b/ros know about Public Health Commissioned Corps? I'm starting college this fall, want to major in environmental health, and heard that's a branch I should look into.
>>
>>729823733
I would say don't plan to make it a career until your first enlistment is almost over. You might join, live it, then fucking hate it after 4 years. Don't set that kind of goal until you know that you want it, friend.
>>
>>729823305
>enlist to protect the things that you love
Oil? I don't like oil. I want payment and benefits. Let's cut with the 'muh freedoms' shit guys and accept that we're imperialists. Do you honestly think Roman legionnaires would stand around in Egypt talking about how the garrison protects their family across the sea or did they admit they did it for money/ benefits/ travel/ fraternity/ killing/ powerful?
>>
>>729824103
This is actually really fucking solid advice. I was stationed with a dude who, for four years, didn't buy a car, lived in the dorms, walked to work... No dumb shit.
The moment he got out, he bought a house outright. Never spent or wasted his money, and immediately set himself up with a great situation once he separated.
>>
>>729824283
>>729824103
These two. The novelty wears off after a few years of real actual work, but when you get out you tend to miss the benefits, opportunities and experiences.

>>
>>729821341
A lot of guys think they're going to go into the military and learn something that they're not going to use in military that's usually not the case. A buddy of mine went in to be a tank mechanic, came out not knowing Jack shit about anything mechanical. What he did learn was how to change a specific module on a specific tank. He can do that shit with his eyes closed but doesn't know the difference between coolant and oil.

If you want to go career on the other hand the military can be great but don't expect to go in for 4 years and come out knowing anything other than military shit.

And if you want to do it for college just go to a good Community College and skip the military all together.

Not saying you shouldn't go in, just that if you do go in, go in informed and with a life plan.

There are a few things you could do in the military that will set you up for civilian life but they are far and few between find out what they are before signing anything and make sure you were getting in where you want to get in. And remember no matter what they say your ass is theirs once you sign that paper. They can and very well might lie to you about what you'll be doing too.

If I was going to do it I get enough college credits under my belt to go in as an officer. If I remember correctly that's about a year of school.
>>
>>729824447
You look at this from a different spectrum, friend. I joined the military in order to out myself in the position to succeed later in life. The things that I love are not protected by military means, they're protected by my ability to provide for my family, have a place to live, and do the things I like. I have those opportunities because of the career path that I chose.

Stop thinking in such a narrow scale. Not everyone is a fucking nationalist.
>>
>>729824513
I gave this advice to plenty of my friends. When I got out six months ago I bought a Subaru WRX straight off the lot and will be buying my own house soon.

All it takes is restraint. Save your money!
>>
>>729824283
Fair enough. Right now, I'd like to make a career out of it, but I suppose I can't be certain that I'll like it. If anything, I'll stay in long enough for them to pay for my college at least and go from there.
>>
>>729822047
Your life, time away from friends and family and quite possibly your sanity. Snarky little dumb shit
>>
>>729824796

Have been brushing up on my algebra (it's been 7 years) and I took another one from home where I got a 93. I'm just stuck between Army or Navy right now.

>Become officer
>gain more money
>great benefits
>learn to do cool shit
>have fun for a while while other people are dying and getting fat in offices
>finish masters while in service
>travel when active duty is over
>work as a consultant for a company like Bane or BCG before I hit 30 with my pumped up resume

If I die, fuck it.

Fellow air force fag here. Been in year and a half. Worse thing about it having to live in close proximity to people you fucking hate and there is no real good way to make them go away. I knew a bunch of guys in college who were there thanks to the GI bill from serving after 9/11. I can think of one or two out of the 20 or so that that didn't have serious emotional or physical problems as a result. These guys served in Afghanistan and Iraq during the early 00's.

>>
>>729825507
That's subjective, though. If you, in your life, have a blue mohawk, and make politically charged statements in public, then yes, your behavior will be restricted.

Personally, I always kept my hair short anyway, and my opinions are only shared with the people close to me. I didn't have to change much about my life to accommodate the required behaviors/appearance.

Again, this is totally subjective to how you want to live.

>>
>>729825624
Well my major concern with the Navy is also what I love about it. Deployment. My biggest fear centers around not being able to go back home to take care of something serious like an illness.

Also I'm not entirely sure what kind of job I would want in the Navy given that Officers have a far more limited spectrum of jobs. I was thinking Naval Surface Warfare Officer.

I got a degree in BA with a minor in Econ and a concentration in Finance.
3.4 GPA. Can rock a PT.
The Army recruiter at least lied to me saying getting into OCS is a super long, difficult process and I would need to score a 270 on the PT, which is outright bullshit. Navy as well basically just said I'm better off enlisting and then seeing if I want to go officer. But I've already made up my mind. Didn't bother working my entire life and going to school to start from scratch.
So my questions are
1. Can I do my Masters while serving (effectively)
2. What are the best Navy jobs, especially for officers
3. What's life generally like

I'm 24 btw. Hoping to knock out my service and higher education and then high tail it back home to work in Boston.
>>
>>729821341
Just don't be a combat job. Literally that easy. You do your 3 and a half-4 years and finish. Easy as that. Don't be some 11B fuck-up or engineer, it's not what you think. Be some desk jocky or mechanic or something lame and do your time get out and use your benefits. When you're in the military, don't spend your cash on every fucking thing you can. Military is worth it if you're smart and don't do retarded things while in it.

Jesus you're a fucking turd, not every job in the military is infantry hooah fucking operator special forces.

I was Army intel, I sat in a box looking at computers, drinking buttloads of coffee, more computers, more coffee, briefed a few platoon leaders and company commanders, rinsed and repeated. At no point in time was I close to dying.
>>
>>729827611
It's far superior, I won't protest that, but there's plenty of shit in the Army to do that doesn't put you at risk of dying and is interesting to do.

>>729827841
How many people died because of your work?

>>
>>729828018
When I was in Afghanistan, nobody in my battalion died. I didn't look at many reports from other battalions, an important mission report that pertained to our AOE, at most. That's 9 months. We had 1 IDF attack, and it didn't even hit the compound I was stationed at.
>>
>>729826638
Being deployed sucks sometimes, not gonna lie.

Going River City sometimes sucks when you have spouses or family to keep in touch with, but usually they'll understand. Arrangements can sometimes be made but not all the time for obvious reasons.

Now, I wasn't officer, I was enlisted. I don't regret it one bit because I truly feel that I've learned my job in a better fashion instead of getting to my ship and looking like a dumbass. A LOT of conflict happens between Officer and Enlisted as far as how things go, you'll see what I mean.

1. You can finish your Masters while you serve, just understand in many cases the job you chose comes first. It's paramount. But if you are a good performer, keep your nose clean, you can ask your Captain(or Commander)to work something out with your studies.

2. Best jobs as far as having something to rely on once you get out, in my opinion is anything Engineering wise. I was an OS2 so I know about radar's and such. Didn't want to do that once I got out, however.

3.This will go into two different categories, Port Life and Ship Life.

Ship life can be troublesome at times because you see the same people everyday. Just like regular work but worse because you're stuck on a boat. But I promise, honest to God, youo will meet some of the best people in your life and make some of the best friends ever in life. Food can sometimes get stale, but the super good shit comes out at Steel Beach Picnics and Holidays. Be friends with the CS's and you can have anything you want. STAY AWAY FROM THE HAMSTERS.

Port Life, homeport especially, is so clutch. I can only speak about my experiences in Japan since I was stationed there the entire time.

You get up outta bed and go to work and come home after you're done. However, while in port you will have duty days. Sometimes they suck, sometimes they don't feel like duty days at all because they fly by and because you aren't on the Watchbill.

I guess in short, not everything will be sunshine .
