Depends... As in music as a whole? Probably Mozart, Beethoven or Bach. Growing up in elementary school, we had to take a mandatory music class, so those names are iconic. Very iconic.

If we get into niches and different genres, Kurt Cobain for grunge... Metal would be probably James Hetfield. Maybe Freddie Mercury or John Lennon (Spelling? Never listened to the Beatles) for Rock? I don't know. Johnny Cash or Elvis Presley for Country?

The greatest individual though? Elvis Presley, maybe. I know people who are 5, 6 and 7 years old who absolutely love Elvis Presley, and the kicker is their parents don't listen to him, they just found him on Youtube and like him. I don't listen to Elvis, but I'm not doubting he was one of the best in music, and if he lived longer than he did, he'd probably have been outright legendary.
