/b/ I want to broaden my music horizons, so hit this thread up with some artists that you really like that you think are underrated, hit a link up with a sick performance or song and I'll give it a listen. Try to make these artist current. I have nothing against older music, but I'm interested in artists that I can watch evolve as musicians and potentially see in show.

I'll start

Personal fav, definitely need to be eased into this type of music if you're not used to it though. I remember I used to hate the vocalists voice, but it's definitely my favourite band atm.

his last two albums are very raw. they're basically the same. Ruminations is an album with just guitar, piano and harmonica he recorded as a demo for Nonesuch records and they said it was perfect to release that way. A few months after, he recorded Salutations, which is the same album (plus 7 other songs) recorded with The Felice Brothers as his backing band and legendary drummer Jim Keltner (Dylan, Presley, Harrison, Lennon, Bowie among many others) on the drums

Falconer is power/folk metal band formed in 1999. their last album was in 2014, so still pretty new. Although, they won't be doing live shows anymore, just sticking to studio. Here's one of my favorites from the self named album "falconer." Hope someone enjoys it.

Jellyfish is extremely underrated, an eccentric power pop/rock band in the early 90s. Very dramatic and inspired by Queen and The Beatles.

Pixies aren't necessarily 'underrated' but compared to the bands they inspired (Nirvana being one of them) they deserve more love

Disturbed was second wave, Korn, Deftones, Slipknot and Limp Bizkit hit the mainstream in the late 90's.
>>

I know that's what Wikipedia says, but I never think of Deftones or Slipknot as "nu metal." Korn and Limp Bizkit for sure though.

OP here, not gonna claim that i'llmake it through this, but thanks, there are some solid suggestions on here
>>
>>729603689
they started playing in the 90s tho.
they sucked before they released any albums, they sucked after they released their first album and they suck now. nu metal is a fucking pox on an otherwise prolific genre
>>
>>729604449
Point still stands though, Disturbed in no way helped kick off anything.
Oh and if Disturbed is nu metal, then Slipknot and Deftones are as well, nu metal is a really vague term which basically means "pop metal from the late 90's and early 2000's".
>>
>>729604640
Get out of here with your pointless holier than thou nonsense about metal sub genres. Nu metal doesn't take anything away from bands like Sabbath or Maiden.

What's your definition of "mainstream"? Radio play? Over a million views on Youtube? Available on Pandora or Spotify? Every one of those bands I've posted, metal and otherwise, have gained a bunch of traction this past year. It's because their being shared and discussed by people who are enthusiastic about the present, and future, state of music. That's what dictates what's mainstream and what's not, despite how good it feels to see these things through a more cynical, conspiratorial scope.
>>
>>729605371
I tend to like a lot of underground acts, and don't really listen to much hyped up shit other than mac demarco, and a few semi decent rappers like kendrick and chance, but there is an appeal to having your music be mainstream. Point in case, when the chili peppers went all wierd goth metally for one hot minute. That shit was tite
>>
>>729605550
Oh hell yeah, these guys too.
>>
>>729605215
having a small legion of internet followers does not indicate mainstream success. Its being part of and cultivating a music scene that influences lots of artists and is part of a bigger picture.
>>
>>729605950
That's what all of those artists I posted are doing.

It always starts with a small legion of followers.
>>
>>729605716
How about radio play on a station that isn't exclusively metal/hard rock? Getting on Pandora or Spotify isn't challenging at all. My friend from high school is on both of those, and his music blows. And there are probably a billion YT videos with a million views. It's gotta be at least 10 million to be mainstream. Probably more.
>>
>>729606061
look, I'm not hating on those artists, I think that they're very decent, but I wouldn't consider any of them to be mainstream at all. That's not a bad thing though, the underground is where true talent usually dwells
>>
>>729606061
You're joking, right? I've heard of exactly one of those bands (Xanthochroid), and only because one of my best friends is into really obscure metal.

>>
>>729606286
>>729606513
Alright, I concede. They're not mainstream, I've just seen many of these bands explode in popularity through streaming services over the past year and that makes me very happy. I'm optimistic about where these guys will go and how they'll shape the medium, even if they do go down the route of countless other bands and eventually lose their capacity for song writing/playing. Their discography will still be out there, and young musicians will still take note.
