Let's clarify things, the big bang was NOT the start of the universe. It was the start of the light that lit up the universe. See picture black = the universe, white = the start of the big bang.
With that being said, I suspect the universe has been here for a lot longer than 14billion years and that the leftover particles from the last "light-cycle", or possibly some other particles that are extremely reactive that only appear once the "light-cycle" has ended collided (due to gravity) and created a mass that was extremely volatile, reactive and radioactive. Then something disturbed that mass and it exploded, spewing forth what we call light and a whole new wave of materials birthing what we call life.
Now I'm no scientist, but that's just my general idea on how it may have happened.

The big bang is not just all of the universes matter splurging out into a previously empty void. Space and time themselves become singular at the big bang, there is no before it out outside it. "Before" makes no sense at all when time itself doesn't exist.
