Don't use heat to remove them, as heat can cause them to regurgitate some of their stomach contents back into you, which obviously isn't a good thing.

One of the best ways I've found is take a qtip or cotton ball, soak it with rubbing alcohol and swab the area/tick with the rubbing alcohol laden qtip or gently place the soaked cotton ball over the tick for a few minutes..

Soon the alcohol will irritate the tick, he will start loosening his grip, and can more easily be extracted with tweezers without the head/mouth breaking off in you

use a lighter. get the metal tip hot a bit and hold it to it. it will sense the danger and release.
otherwise use tweezers and gently pull it out rotating counter clockwise (i think) slowly. make sure the head doesnt pull off because that shit will get infected hardcore.

Me and my son went hiking once and didn't realize it was tick season. We got covered with them. There are two ways to remove them, one is to cover them in Vaseline, it will suffocate them and they will crawl off. The other is to burn them with something like a cigarette. If you burn them too hot they die and stay stuck in you. Also you need someone to inspect you because they like to crawl into warm fold, this means you butt and under your balls where you can't see. We had to strip and look for ticks, I found one between my sons butt cheeks and he found one in the crook of my thigh and under my balls.

If you don't remove them quickly you risk getting lime disease.

It's like half the people on this site have never been in the woods.
I always just get dog ticks off with my fingernails, but I'm so hairy I usually get them before they bite (protip they always climb up).
My eyes are shit so for me deer ticks are kind of a lost cause. I've tested positive for Lyme twice and the last time I thought I had it the doctor just gave me antibiotics without waiting for test results. It's not that big of a deal if you get it treated but if you miss the mark and then go without getting it treated for a while it really sucks.

It's important to remove them as quick as possible, and to NOT squeeze their bodies which is essentially injecting yourself with their guts. I get bit at least a dozen times a year but they are never attached for more than a few hours.
