It's purely anecdotal, but I find the majority of my friends got onto the housing ladder aged 25-30. These people have professions such as IT Manager, Teacher, Nurse in the NHS, Occupational Therapist... white collar/stereotypically middle-class jobs.

I find the people complaining about not being able to get onto the housing market, or complaining about work conditions or whatever... they tend to be either working minimum wage jobs, made poor decisions in their career (or don't have a job at all) or made a ridiculous decision with their degree and are saddled with stupid debt for making that decision... I find that people are a product of their stupid choices and cannot get onto the housing market that way.

But as I say... it's purely anecdotal - it just seems to be the way things 100% always pan out for me around here.

I have almost enough saved for a deposit on a decent house - but that amount equals an almost 50% deposit on a house in the country I intend to buy one in (Sweden, where my partner is from, we have a kid together and I'd like her to be entitled to free higher education - something my parents couldn't afford to put me through).

It's ridiculously difficult to earn security in this country - you need to inherit it

Parents were brought up in working class families. Dad was disabled, mum was a teacher. We never had much money - being frugal freed their kids up for a world of opportunities. Both my brother and me have student loans, which our jobs have for the most part managed to pay off... I'm 29 as well bud, I work in IT, I'm going to be earning around 47k as I move jobs next month and like yourself it's the end result of hard work. My parents have only just finished paying off the mortgage to their house and they're both in the 60s now attempting to enjoy retirement...

I haven't felt at all that I needed to inherit wealth to survive in this country. I genuinely feel that the hard work I put in from the beginning of my school days is paying off. My parents announcing that they are willing to sell the house at a reduced price is the icing on the cake, but had they not done that I've already been looking around for 140k mortgages over 15 years (easily manageable in the situation I'm in) and that's after managing to save a 30k deposit.

It's sounding more like "lol hard work solves everything" in this little tirade and that's not what I'm trying to say. I just feel personal responsibility has absconded from the country and people look to blame a system, which for the most part, has worked out fine for me, my colleagues and friends who all come from similar backgrounds and have ended up in decent careers. I'm not saying that it's as easy to "get a job and buy a house"... I will say that a lot of people have no financial common sense and to expect people to save for a house, to get a decent mortgage and to research market rates etc is a joke.

Blame can be put on the individual and the state for not instilling the importance of that education.
