This isn't what Nuclear war will be.

Nuclear war will be an attack on several key target spots(every high population city in europe/america and most military base). If you leave within a mile of a high target area you mys well call it a day on your life but if you leave say 5-20 miles away you will see it before the noise/wind reaches you. It's important to count and run for the hills IMMEDIATELY. The blasts of course aren't going to be that devastating, obviously they will kill millions and will be the thing most people will talk about in movies but in reality no more than a couple 100 or so will need to go off to really send a message and likely destroy our planet. Hence why nukes aren't detonated on land, the main thing to fear with nukes is obviously the radiation BUT even THATS avoidable. Pack up as lot of food and often you will be able to go out your bunker in a couple months even provided only for a couple minutes. But the radiation will pass. The problem is that the sun will likely be covered and the effects will be nearly impossible to recover from as a culture. The question is if you even want to survive a nuclear blast whether than if you can.

That's not how nuclear ballistic missile work

Realistically if you actually WANT to survive you need to go somewhere like Antarctica or somewhere in South America. Build a bunker of some kind, it should be fairly deep. Remember even dirt can somewhat prevent radiation. Obviously to avoid you're not going to want to be too close to cities but you're going to need to scavenge supplies, like a lot of them. Enough for at least a couple months, because after that you should be safe for the most part to go outside provided your not literally in the blast zone. Take off your close instantly outside before you enter your safe zone, theirs only so much rads you can take but after awhile it shouldn't be entirely lethal but obviously you will likely get cancer(bummer). Anyway after a couple months you can now scavenge for supplies a little bit if their is anything. Honestly surviving a nuclear attack isn't even worth it.
