Scenario 1: the fall of Rome
Western society has begun to unravel due to sheer decadence. Our culture is drifting from healthy norms and now idolizes that which exists without practical function. They turn blind eyes to real issues while dividing people amongst imaginary foes. We're so caught up in our free time spent enjoying luxury that the real issues escape us.

With a third world war economies will buckle. No longer will the full bounty of decadence be available as scarcity of resources and war economies demanding hard work eat up the time and luxuries dwindle. Priorities will change with the war as people focus on surviving. I don't expect it to be easy for many of the softened countries. Populations will be set back far enough where a post war world cannot just pick up where it left off. Just as after the last one the people of the nation's will have to seek out purpose again. The efforts to rebuild will strengthen the western world. And we can hopefully settle into a world where life can be enjoyed but people do not forget the values that make us strong.

Option 2 is Armageddon
Or close to it. Weapons of mass destruction are utilized by a nation and other nations respond in kind, decimating population and habitability. We either completely wipe the planet of life or push ourselves past a point of recovery and set mankind back centuries.
