They're so your body recognises foreign and native cells. ABO and Rhesus reactivity causes the most immediate problems in humans so we learn about them the most. In truth there are hundreds or thousands of these markers. We don't worry about them because either they cause minor immune reactions which can be suppressed (in transplants) or they're common to all humans.

The evolutionary advantage is immune defense.

Besides a good GPA and MCAT, what did you do in college that looks good on your med school application?

How does med school even work? Like I know that there's two years classroom two years rotations, but do you get to choose what you do?

My fiancee majored in speech and hearing and had no trouble at all getting into med school. The first ~6 months were a hell of a steep learning curve for her. Once she caught up to the bio majors, she started to leave them in the dust. Physics doesn't have much of an impact. Go biochem, or even pharm.

So how risky is it if Ive increased to drinking roughly a fifth of vodka per day?
I also take mood stabilizers (lamictal 150mg twice a day). I just recently stopped taking Lexapro 20mg a day (cold turkey bc I couldn't afford to go back to the dr for a refill auth.)
Ive been getting this weird sensation, almost like electricity in my chest and limbs? If that makes sense
May be unrelated, but it's also become hard to sleep because even though I've traditionally not remembered dreams, I have strings of bad dreams that wake me up and restart, which makes it hard at that moment to determine if I'm awake or asleep
My brain feels fuzzy a lot of days lately
I have a sense of fear and impending dread most of the time
I rarely go 24 hrs without drinking

Not OP, but as a recovering alcoholic with 5 years sober, I can shed some light:

At this point, don't try to quit drinking cold turkey. You will likely have a seizure and could die. You'll either need to taper off or get medically detoxed.

Personally, I could never summon the power to taper myself off of booze, so I had to be medically detoxed. I just went to the hospital and told them what was up, and they took it from there.

Good luck with everything. I drank a fifth of whiskey everyday for a long time. Before I quit drinking, I was up to a half-gallon of whiskey per day. It only gets worse, never better. You should quit sooner rather than later.

I know I should. I used to go to AA but for the last year and some I've been going downhill. The thought of going back is honestly terrifying. And even though I can't explain why, just the idea of not drinking is scary too. I'm scared all the time now. It's not fun anymore. It's like a second fucking job. I broke up with my long term girlfriend last week and I honestly couldn't tell you if it's because I don't love her the same way anymore or if Ive started becoming, delerious isnt the right word but it's the closest I can come up with. Im so fucking scared anon.
Sorry I'm some shots in already.
>>
>>728716152
It's a well-documented fact, no matter how smug you are. And, for your information, I'm not in med school because I'm in law school - another place to witness jewish nepotism in admissions first-hand.
>>
>>728716247
We've all been there. The Big Book even talks about that as the "jumping-off place": when we get to a point where we can't imagine life with or without alcohol.

Besides, relapse is part of most people in AA's story. No one would judge you for going back. The first time I was in AA, I was sober for about a year and relapsed. It sucked going back, but that was really just my pride and ego. As my sponsor says: "You can save both your face and your ass."

You're going to have to memorize and absolute fuckton of information, especially the hundreds of drugs, their specific uses, their side effects, their Mechanisms of Action, their half-lives, their drug interactions, and their side effects.

You're also going to have to memorize all of the bugs people can get.

Sketchy Pharm, Sketchy Micro, and Sketchy Pathology can make your life somewhat easier, but you're still going to have to read and memorize everything. The Sketchies just make it easier to remember.

Then, there's U-World, Anki, Khan, and the list goes on forever.

Those are ADDITIONAL resources to get a better understanding of high-yield topics. That's not even the course literature.

Thanks for the honest advice. I actually have my copy of the big book a few feet from where I sleep and at least once a week I contemplate opening it and then I dont. I'll try to wean off instead of detox but if it comes to that I guess it's how it's gotta be. I'll go to a meeting.
Thanks for being a good guy anon. I'm honestly near tears because I don't tell people this shit and it's just nice to be honest and see that I'm not demeaned for it. Because I'm really so fucking ashamed.

>>728716543
>Are you jewish? If not, how did you get into law school?
I am not jewish. I got into law school, Columbia to be precise, because I had stellar grades in college and scored in the 99th percentile on the LSAT. Straight-up merit. No nepotism.

>PS - sources pls.

"But suppose these estimates are correct, and Asians overall are indeed twice as likely as Jews to rank among America’s highest performing students. We must also consider that America’s Asian population is far larger in size, representing roughly 5 percent of college-age students, compared to just 1.8 percent for Jews. Therefore, assuming an admissions system based on strictest objective meritocracy, we would expect our elite academic institutions to contain nearly five Asians for every Jew; but instead, the Jews are far more numerous, in some important cases by almost a factor of two. This raises obvious suspicions about the fairness of the Ivy League admissions process."

Extracurriculars. Ones that make you stand out.

Med school is obscenely difficult. Studying 8-16 hours a day for the first and second year preparing for Step 1 (boards). There are 3 sets of boards. 3rd and 4th doing rotations anywhere from 16-24 hour shifts WHILE having to use any precious downtime to study for shelf tests.

Then, after med school, depending on what you want to specialize in, you're looking at anywhere from 3-7+ years.

It's not for the undedicated. It is NOT fun, although there are some fun parts. It is the most difficult thing people could do with their lives.
>>
>>728714372
Harder than college of course. Year one is study of normal systems. Year two is study of abnormal. Classes and material is all centralized for MD programs. (Think central ciriculum). Year 3 is mandatory rotations. Elective rotations in year 4 for exploring particular job interest.

As far as what to do in college, hit the basics. Research, volunteer, lead.

I've been on adderall about 6 or 7 years now (I'm 28). I'm beginning to get worried about my health. I'm not expecting you to offer your services to me for free, but if you don't mind I'd like to tell my history with it and my health in general.

I'm currently prescribed 25 mg a day, instant release. In the past I would abuse the drug, and take up to 40 mg a day, plus consume coffee or energy drinks. I also used to smoke cigarettes (i haven't had one in going on 2 years. I have since stopped abusing it for the most part (some days I'll take 30 mg instead of 25). I also have limited myself to only one caffeinated beverage per day; be it a can of soda or a coffee, I don't drink energy drinks anymore. The rest is water. I used to be very fit (ran track and high school and was active in general), but unfortantely now am up 250 lbs (i'm 6'2"). I have lived a very sedentary lifestyle since university. I was recently imformed that sitting for extended periods of time is pretty hard on the circulatory system. Also for the longest time (since I've lived with my parents at age 18 and a little after college) I have eaten like shit; lots of fast food and frozen / processed. I guess the one good thing about my lifestyle over the past few years is I have always consumed a lot of water, though i recently heard that too much water can also be bad for your circulatory system and vasculature if you have high blood pressure.

As I said I have since quit smoking and cut pack on caffeinated drinks, and more recently I have been trying to move more, get up and stretch my legs if i've been sitting for a while, and have been learning my way around the kitchen along with buying groceries / produce

My fear is that this is too little too late, and that I have already done permanent damage to my heart and circulatory system. I say this because occassionally I get these pains in my chest; i'm not sure if its my heart all the time, or only some of the time or what. (continued...)
>>
>>728716789
Math/physics majors tend to do the best, but you'll have a lot of catching up to do. You can always minor in bio or chem.
>>
>>728718571
It also seems as though I have this persistent, shallow cough but can rarely hack anything up (except in the morning). Also, my heart rate dramatically increases when doing even the most basic physical activity. I always chalked this off as being out of shape and smoking, but now I am starting to wonder.

I would also like to add above, to the already exceedingly large list of stressors I put on my heart / body, that I also have pretty bad anxiety that affects me on a near daily basis. Also, there was a time, probably not too long after I was put on the medication, I had to run upstairs for something, and on my way back down i stepped on my roommate's cat and slid all the way down, busting open my finger on something in the process. I then ran upstairs to dress the wound and as soon as i put peroxide on the injury, I felt this incredible pain in my chest that dropped me to my knees for a few seconds but then went away. I didn;'t think much of it then, but looking back i wonder if i had a heart attack.

I'm not sure what to do. I know i need to talk to my doctor, but I have been putting it off because I'm afraid, and because I don't currently have health insurrance (i'm currently going back to college and living off of an inheritance, and have too much pride to enroll in gibmedats care). Would it be unheard of for someone my age, given my history, has done irreparable damage to his heart or circulatory system?

Develops. It's a break down in the structures in the lung that exchange oxygen with the environment and the blood. Take a plastic shopping bag. Super easy to fill with air, but it just sort of stays full. The bag has no elastic resistance to squeeze the air out. This is your lung on emphysema.

Yes. That's a profession that's going to explode over the next decade with technological leaps that happen every few months.

haha that is true. Besides, the nursing curriculum is shit. Most of the learning happens on the job through experience. I went with nursing instead for a less stressful life, more time to do shit, and not worry about loans. Yes the pay is nowhere near, however in Cali nurses can make a great living, especially if they choose to pick up extra shifts.

Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor. If you already HAVE a serious heart problem, it's going to be there whether a doctor tells you about it or not.

My guess is you're just out of shape, but you should definitely see a doctor before you think about starting an exercise regimen.

You're only 28. Any damage you have done you can undo as long as you start taking better care of your weight. Walking is excellent, both for your anxiety and for your heart at your height and weight.

My sister's in an accelerated BSN program too, and I just laugh when she tells me how much she has to study. Oh no, 3 hours every night! Nurses just about anywhere can make a great living. Nurse burnout is unfortunately rampant.

Sometimes when I go to bed after smoking too much, my breathing is extremely laboured and I can't fall asleep. Even gets a little panicky.

Is there an underlying cause of this? Obviously just don't smoke is the answer...

MT ASCP is also good if you want ya know reliable income. Biotech/biomed/research is all grant chasing.
I strongly advise being able to be a "floater" or per diem for clinical labs.

I'm sure in an accelerated program you can get away with studying 3 hours a night
