Does not happen because shifting becomes an habit.

Besides it is not an action you need to actively look at the shiftstick for. basic motor skills will do.

As a yuropoor i can say:
Logically speaking there is no reason for a car to be manual anymore. We've got the technology and it improves your life, therefore - why the fuck not? If you don't agree with this simple concept why don't you ride on horseback? People are afraid though because it's seen as unmanly to have an automatic car which is probably the only reason why we didn't adapt.

>>
>>728677258
on highway it actually is. on highways you dont change gears so you're not doing anything?
>>
>>728677009

Yeah this is pretty well known to people that actually give a shit about cars. Manual transmissions are generally 100-200 lbs lighter than their automatic counterparts, making them more efficient in several ways. They are also more durable, last longer, and handle more torque than automatics. The automatic transmission is literally only available because of convenience. And now it's the cancer that is choking the automotive industry to a slow and painful death. Even CVTs, which in theory are the most efficient transmission concept, have been modified to be less efficient, prone to issues and breakdowns, and even heavier because manufacturers received complains that people want them to behave like automatics. My fellow Americans are lazy assholes.
>>
Been driving my dads automatic Volvo, its good to drive but it gets a little boring, cant wait to get my own manual back from repair
>>
>>728676099
Cars are stupid in general, the whole culture creates too many cancerous autofags that think they're hard as fuck.
>>
>>728677009
You can short shift with manual which means better milage. Or you can hit the limiter for better acceleration.
I have an auto and manuals. Manual is more fun and more control. I get complacent and fall asleep driving my auto.
>>
>>728677388
that's exactly my point - there's no logical reasoning behind not wanting an automatic
as >>728677009 pointed out: there are indicators thowards logical arguments, but noone gives a fuck anyways.
it's an emotional decision
>>
>>728677132
You get both because your not wasting energy through a torque converter
>>
Amerifat here.

I drive a manual, and I drive an auto. Just depends on the weather, what mood I am in, and how long of a trip I am taking.
>>
>>728676788
>fact that automatics get better gas mileage
lol that people believe this
>>
>>728676099
Because they need to hold the Coke in right hand
>>
Constantly cycling neutral, first, second in traffic is ass. Reason enough. Automatics arent commonly available because the convenience is enjoyed and the cost is affordable and justifiable. However, outside of traffic, manual is certainly more fun, and as far as the car responding to you, automatic is absolute ass (no response from depressing pedal until it suddenly drops gear and throttles way up).

>>728677009
I fully expect that is only true if you follow all the obsessions necessary for maximizing mileage, which is unrealistic for any transmission.
>>
Automatic transmission is factually safer due to requiring 2 less limbs to operate the vehicle. It allows you to maintain both hands in the wheel, or multitask while driving without further impediment to your ability to operate the vehicle.

The excuse of mildly better gas mileage and cheaper repair are poorfag tier. The excise of a manual being more "fun" is the only acceptable one, but not everyone is looking for a hobby in their driving experience.

manual is going to outdated in the next decade or two. The only argument for it is that an experienced human can have the engine perform slightly better than an automatic. As soon as that threshold is crossed and they can tighten up an auto transmission to the point that its more adept than a human, manual transmissions will be obsolete
>>
It's like most things. Automatic is just easier and boring for people that can't be bothered using more motor skills or brain power than they need to. It's more convenient for the lazy person.

First car I ever drove was a little manual Honda. I loved that car. But now that I live in the city, I have an automatic. I'm glad I do, too. Most mornings I can barely drive fifty feet before having to slow to a complete stop. There's no purpose for me to have a manual transmission anymore. To be honest, I've been thinking about getting rid of my car altogether.
>>
>>728680004
I admit that it us dumb in that respect but it's about being able to stop and not kill yourself. If your going down a steep hill and your brakes overheat or fail then that equals death in an automatic.

A standard transmission should only be used in vehicles that need it, like large trucks, high performance vehicles, or even classic cars. >>728680921
Why not? You keep in the right gear and rev range to either accelerate off or brake further. If your in neutral coasting with foot on brake then what happens if your child walks out in front? Just brake harder and hope for best? It's even easier to coast in a munual if you were so bothered. Just bang the clutch in.

A stick in a minivan is the most retarded thing I've ever imagined, but anybody who drives a high-performance work of art with an automatic deserves to be shipped to Sweden or some other African country.
>>
Manuals : Easier to repair (can still drive when semi-broken) more control of your vehicle with capability to predict torque at any given moment. Better gas mileage (if you're not a tool.) more reliable, cheaper to fix. But kind of annoying when you're stuck in highway stop and go.

Automatics: Much more convenient, easier to eat mcdonalds and easier to suck your boyfriend off.

I've owned 7 cars in my life. Mr2 sw20, 240sx, crx si, mazda speed 3, s2000, jeep cherokee, and fox body mustang. I personally prefer manual transmission, but here in 'merica' they actually charge you more money on a new car to get manual if it is even offered... >>
>>728681657
Why do race cat drivers and motor sports use engine braking then? Why do they not coast round corners? Why they put all that strain on their expensive engine dropping to 2nd gear for a tight corner? When they could just replace their brakes instead???

I've been a driving "coach" for about 10 years. Our company cars are all automatics for insurance and maintenance reasons, but we teach engine braking to stundents in the state mandated classroom and when they bring their own personal stick shifts. Unless you are grinding the gears it doesn't really wear them, maybe just a bit of clutch, but nothing more expensive than running through brake pads all the time
>>

>>728678835
Once they're all electric transmission as a whole will be obsolete. Until then I'll stick with the double clutch automatics. The one I drive now allows me to change gears manually from the paddles on the wheel anyway ..
>>
>>728682548
I'm talking about in a real car, not in a fucking semi. And with progressive braking - i.e. not "hitting the brakes" but exponential increasing pressure - you'll stop faster.

Of course, since every fucking person on the road drives a "lorry..." OH WAIT THEY FUCKING DON'T.

Engine braking in a regular car isn't going to do a whole bunch of damage either ya dumb red coat.

Sure if you're slamming into gears and over reving. You'll break shit. Other than that it's fine
>>
>>728676099
Almost every car I've ever owned has been a manual transmission...
half the cars I own right now have a manual
>>
>>728679662
Okay, but what does that have to do with the transmission?
>>
>>728683050
I do it every chance I get. Because it saves brake pads etc.

You act like doing this in a regular car is going to make it explode
>>
>>728676099
Actually Americans prefer manuals over other countries. All the euro fags like floppy paddle shifters.
>>
>>728683050
I live in an area with lots of hills and low speed limits. It's nice to be able to just pop into 2nd gear down a steep hill so I don't have to ride my brakes to stay under 30mph.

>>728683256
Half of zero is still zero.
>>

I enjoy driving. I race in rallyx and drift race's. I need a clutch. So I'm biased. And I use engine braking while driving round town and approaching stop lights as it sounds and feels awesome. Anti lag and shit. Bwooorm Bwooorm tshhhhht Braaaarwn tsssht. Pop n bang bro's
>>
>>728683187
Neither does regular stopping. How often have you replaced your brake pads? Not often. If you're slamming the brake down, you'll equally wear the pads out faster, just like you'd break your transmission if you jammed down four gears to stop.

In an emergency, which are you going to default to? The brakes.

In either situation of "normal wear," which is cheaper to replace? Yup, the brake pads. Which stops you faster? Yup, the brakes.
>>
>>728683187
You know what else is fine? Coasting from a mile back and then lightly pressing the pedal to stop. Not only do you save money and have a vastly improved gas mileage, but you are also excersizing American freedom and heterosexuality
>>
>>728676099
Most enjoyable way to drive is manual transmission automatics make driving so boring.
>>
I drive manual and actually know how to use the rpm gauge to synchronize clutch torque with engine torque when I downshift or get in gear from neutral. This takes skill and time to learn.
>>
>>728683589
That's a slippery slope, anon. Pretty soon we'll just be bicycling, walking, and possibly posting on Craigslist offering blowjobs for bukkake videos.

No, but then again when we design a rocket it has a very specific trip to make. The only other circumstances taken into account are circumstances considered an error and generally quite bad.

Sure, I can give you a car that drives itself and does everything on a very specific trip with very specific traffic at a very specific moment, but guess what, you're an assclown who thinks that's inconvenient because you might want to creep up some high school girls at different times.

If you want to be able to do a lot then install things to be able to handle different circumstances.
Automatics are getting better but christ most of the ones driving on the road are so terrible in speed, fuel consumption or gearing up at an awkward moment.

>I have enough money idc about fuel

What even is this engine braking argument? In auto and manual you press brake to stop. But in manual you have the option to stop in a shorter distance should the moment arise. They teach that in UK for safety reasons. It's the quickest and safest way to stop.
UK people don't engine brake when coming up to a stop ha. But they can if an emergency or to look cool.
>>
>>728676099
American parents rarely teach their children to drive manual transmission because they either don't know how to themselves, or just don't own a manual auto. The vast majority of cars in America are manual for whatever reason.

I have a manual 04 Evo, I enjoyed learning manual, but now that I'm used to it I don't care for it. I drive mostly in the city and every other weekend I do a 7h drive out of state to visit my family. I'm getting an automatic next time since where I live, manuals cost more than their automatic counterparts (not as common so people can sell them as "rare"), and my insurance is higher because it's manual. For me, cars just are a means to an end; I'm indifferent to driving; I don't dislike it, but it's not fun. I just do it cause I have to but I'd rather just get to where I'm going.

Okay, you guys are all retards.

Take your car's 0-60 time. Then your 60-0 time under engine braking. Notice that the latter is less than the former.

This proves that when you're engine braking, the engine and transmission is under less stress than when you're accelerating.

And you don't see a bunch of gaylords going oooooooh why are you acceleerating youuu might wear out your eeengine, now, do you?

You're not going to damage anything by asking it to do less than it's capable of.

That describes a DCT (dual-clutch transmission). What the other anon was describing are specialized automatic transmissions (often just two or three speeds, which is all they need because the powerbands on the engines they're attached to are huge) designed to lock their torque converter extremely quickly and to shift absurdly fast.

>>728690269
The defining feature of manual transmission is the clutch.

I'm from Europe and have learned driving on a manual. Maybe it is a thing that in European countries, you have usually better public transport system, things are a little bit smaller and denser. The United States have a huge connected economy and culture, driving ways are longer, streets are more straight and in a rectangular layout. I think there's more traffic on the streets of the USA. So the need for a convenient automatic drive car is higher.
