Of the many legal rights conferred on spouses, in the USA, are powers of attorney, inheritance, medical decision-making, et cetera. These aren't things that can be shared by groups. Take inheritance: one person dies, and the spouse legally determines how to disperse their belongings. Now put a second spouse in there. The legal protections between spouses no longer function.

Human's reproductive strategy involved raising little amount of offspring to raise them with more resources, increasing the chances of healthier and fitter offspring.

Marriage, as a legal system, is mostly to put on paper who own what when the couple broke up/the husband or wife dies.

With polygamy still allowed, it was a legal nightmare between the kids. Now that nobility and royalty are things of the past, the legal need for polygamy was not there anymore, and hence it simply disapeared. You now simply take a mistress/divorce your previous spouse because there is no more requirement to have a main male heir anymore.

It is not really illegal. You won't face criminal charge for polygamy. What happen though is that a marriage provide a lot of tax/nationaliity/other advantages, and is a contract between the state and two individuals. To prevent abuse of the law, you can only marry one person at the same time.

If not, on the first day polygamy is allowed, I would set up a shop were you can buy a spouse visa buy marrying me for 50 bucks. All genders allowed.

So if you heard about someone being sued for poligamy or some shit, you will see that the actual crime is 99% of the time fraud. Not "polygamy".

- marriage age for men climbed to over 30

- many boys were booted out of society for minor, indeed made up, infractions so that they wouldn't be competition for wives.

- women are mistreated because they are interchangeable when there are multiple wives

- the death / disability of any man can send many women & children into poverty.

- poverty rises and social programs are strained because there are so few working men supporting such a large family. Each child/wife has less income to support her.
