Essentially, you're right. My point is: it's imaginable for 7.5 billion people (possibly even more) to live without furthering the environmental degradation.

However, that would require transcending the human nature as we know it, eg. limit the meat consumption, limit the ability to stockpile goods and money, limit the breeding rights, etc.
