It's not as "scary" as in just kinda fucked up and possessing good atmosphere. The ghost is not really threatening at any point, it just exists and sometimes does shit.

What makes a horror movie decent? If it scares you? The plot? Acting? I mean fuck man, I've sat through too many movies that jerk themselves to a bittersweet and usually visible ending. Much like cinema in general, the horror genre is an ocean of trash with the occasional patch of fresh water.

CITW is a must-watch if you're in any way a Joss Whedon fan. It's not at all on the "Scary Movie" tier, but it definitely tries to incorporate the elements of stereotypical horror while being funny about it, so sorta like "Scream" but not really going for true horror in the end, but more Joss Whedon style of sci-fi weirdness.

In other words it's pretty much what you'd expect Joss Whedon's take on horror to be, and it doesn't disappoint in that regard.

This thread is weird though because it's all subjective. Some people like the Babadook or Lords of Salem and others hate The Thing or The Shining. And some just say "it wasn't scary therefore it's a bad movie" when you have to consider what the movie's trying to say. Horror is a very difficult thing to portray and pull off and you could technically cheat and jumpscare but that doesn't actually represent a "good" horror movie.

SAW is really fucking good. The first one I mean -- the rest are just gore porn. The first one has no gore -- it's pure psychological horror/suspense/mystery. It thus has no standard horror formulas but is still creepy as fuck.

>>728485366
Session 9 is actually one of my favorites as well, if you like alternative approaches to horror. The basic thing is that it has all the standard "haunted house" formulas but ends up turning it kinda inside out a bit and you end up scared and suspended by something totally different. Totally worth watching even if you hate David Caruso (like I do).

Event Horizon more so because it is about opening up a portal to hell and having demons fuck with you but Eraserhead is just a surreal wacko movie.

No they don't have to prove they exist. It'd be like having to prove god exists at trial. Guy who owns the rights is a moron for suing, he'll end up a homeless bum when WB is done with him.

Event Horizon for sure is horror -- it follows all the tropes to a T.

Alien is another case where people are iffy, but the first one definitely is horror (but Aliens not so much, while Alien 3 more so -- it's all about the asymmetry of power in such cases)

Sphere, at least the film version, is probably the closest Crichton piece to horror. In fact the Crichton film adaptations kinda illustrate how much of a role simple tropes such as music, timing, paranoia, closed spaces, arguments, etc., play in distinguishing "horror" from "thriller" or "action".

I wholy disagree, horror is specially shitty compated to any other genre

For me it's how fucked up it can be without being cringy, and there's a fine line between both. Jump scares without reason throw any movie straight to gargbage. I think it was when I watched Mama that I started noticing how much garbage happens in the plot just for the sake of showing it to the camera, like some jump scares where the character himself isn't even aware of the reason and nothing even happens. I need to feel empathy for the characters, so it doesn't cut it for me. Also, specially stupid characters that are only dumb to keep the plot moving are a huge turn off to me.

You should probably read a summary-review before paying to see a movie at a cinema, instead of just relying on TV ads. I remember when A Beautiful Mind came out and the ads were trying to sell it as an action thriller about an NSA spy on the run.

So of course you had people going to see it on opening weekend to find a romantic biopic about a mentally ill mathematician, something they would never ever voluntarily watch. And just as my hillbilly friends in high school didn't get me to like Fast and Furious by making me watch it, execs won't get hillbillies to like movies about depressed professors -- so everybody who went to see it told their friends it was the worst movie ever.

Then of course the DVD comes out and I see ads for it on TV -- the exact same ones! Like they're trying to trick people again into buying something they absolutely do not want!

So yeah, I can understand that kind of pain, but there was much more excuse for being duped by marketers in the dial-up days than now in the always-on internet days.

God, fuck marketers.

Whoever watches it has to keep in mind the context in which it was launched. I must have watched it after like 15 years it was launched, after watching dozens of other found footage movies. So the impact it has is really dampened because the formula was milked dry.

That and when it was launched, the whole advertising was based on being based in a true story, with even fake interviews going viral. It was a real feat by its time, but it's a total commonplace nowadays.

It was worth more for the historical value than the horror itself to me.

>Ringu

Overrated except as being much better than the overrated The Ring.

(How was it better, you might ask? Basically, lots of dead silence, washed-out colors, and overcast skies. The Ring was overproduced with constant background music and effects, which removes the absolutely essential stoic atmosphere.)
>>
>>728488080
I can understand that. On the other hand, I was pleased with the hype of it being a horror movie because I thought it made the scifi twist a lot more unexpected and better. That's just me though, I can totally see how that'd be disappointing to a lot of people.

Can you believe that even after all these years, my gf still tought it was a true story? That's why I have to give it what it's due. It's easy to forget or not even know what it was back then if you're too young. I myself was a kid so I couldn't watch it back then, but I do remember the hype and talk about how scary it was that it was real.

(I obviously trolled my gf to death, but she got her revenge when I didn't believe the Warren couple and story from the conjuring were real)

I'm a sucker for space horror and it's not a well explored genre. I love the likes of Sunshine, Alien and Event horrizon. Pandorum was more action-esqe but is great too.

Overall, I like movies that keep you guessing and questioning reality with the character. Those usually have a good payoff at the end. Split and the Island come to mind now. For me it's mandatory that it has a grim ending, with that "all is lost" feeling, but nothing has to be completly in vain.

I have been attracted to elder characters recently, like in Logan and the not well known Remember. Horror movies usually explore helplessness and vulnerability through a kid's innocence perspective, but it's way more tense to me when an experienced character is fragile and vulnerable to daily stuff, because he is much more aware of what's happening.

Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Lots of keks to be had, and actually a really fantastic horror twist movie at the end. You will NOT be disappointed.

If you want keks, I also recommend the first 30 minutes of House Of 1000 Corpses. But turn it off after that, because the rest of the movie (another fucking 90 min) is just gore porn -- nothing remotely funny or clever.

I've seen Southbound four times, it's great after watching several times

I have a few honorable mentions:
Home Movie- very nicely done, a priest and a psychiatrist try to understand what causes evil

The Good Neighbor- not a traditional horror movie, but two high school kids try to convince their neighbor his house is haunted

Kill List- I think it's overrated, I read reviews that said it was great. It's pretty good, but not as good as Southbound

Rosewood was legit kinda scary

Well maybe hype ruined it for you, but I went into knowing almost nothing about it and enjoyed it thoroughly. I would consider it a modern classic if the ending hadn't gone off the rails.

it's from the movie dumbass

"Eckhart saw Hell too. He said: 'The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you", he said. "They're freeing your soul. So, if you're frightened of dying and... you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth.'
